Met Ball revisited – Good dresses.

May 10th, 2011

The New York Costume Institute’s annual gala is THE fashion event of the year. Wall to Wall with stunning gowns and glamorous make-up, this is the one event that no fashionista wants to miss. This year the ball was a tribute to the late, great Alexander McQueen, with the Savage Beauty exhibition of his fabulous gowns opening at the Met. Of course, this meant a range of beautiful McQueen gowns on show, but many other designers were showcased too, with Stella McCartney having a very busy Met ball. Here are my picks for the best and worst dresses.

Best

Ginnifer Goodwin flew the flag for the high street with this emerald-green dress custom-made by the Topshop Unique design team.

Taylor Swift showed her usual, impeccable style with a nude and black J Mendal Couture gown. It was nothing new for Taylor, but hey if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Jennifer Hudson continued her impressive run of Red  carpet looks with a beautiful ball gown by Vera Wang. This seemed very appropriate for the Met Ball – a real dressed up look.

Madonna channelled 1930s elegance in a blue satin Stella McCartney dress. This was ultra flattering and with the screen siren waves in her hair, she looked totally amazing. One of my favourites.

Renee Zellweger and Gwyneth Paltrow both shone in gold backless dresses. Gwyneth dripped liquid gold in a Stella McCartney dress that showcased her amazing figure and go-on-forever legs. Renee also looked beautiful in a Carolina Herrera nude/gold dress with sequined train. This was gorgeous, the only jarring point being that Renee’s back resembled something from Torchwood!

Sarah Jessica Parker looked demure and beautiful in a 2005 Alexander McQueen nude beaded gown, showing that showing less flesh can look devastating in an amazing dress. Selma Hayek also looked great in McQueen, wearing a sheer chiffon floaty dress with a corsage detail.

Ashley Greene from Twilight sparkled in a Donna Karen strapless dress that was very Old Hollywood, whilst Diane Kruger looked like Veronica Lake reborn in Jason Wu. Livia Firth, wearing a one-off eco design from Stella McCartney reminded me of Doris Day in her early 1960s heyday, with a long skirt worn over a trouser suit.

Pregnant stars Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson both went for gold, strapless options. Jessica wore a Ralph Lauren gold draped number, whilst Kate was another aficionado of Stella McCartney. Both looked glowing and glamorous.

Zoe Saldana went for a yellow Calvin Klein strapless column dress to great effect. I loved the colour and the simplicity of this design.

My absolute favourite dress on the evening was the gold Alexander McQueen dress worn by supermodel Karen Elson. She had previously modelled the gown on the catwalk, and the dress was apparently ripped. But she looked incredible on the night, a real tribute to the genius of McQueen.

Stayed tune for the frocky horrors from the night…there were plenty.

Sorry but I hate the Ginnifer Goodwin dress from Topshop, Yuk! I do love Madonna’s look for a change. I am a massive Madge fan but even I’m getting sick of the leotard look. Lets face it the camels hoof not a good look on anyone especially if your a women of a certain age. Gwyneth Paltrow looked very elegant and SJP is stunning as usually but Renee Zellweger back is disgusting, think she looked better when she played the fuller figured Bridget Jones!
