The MTV Fashion VMAS

Any MTV awards seem to promise a wide range of interesting looks – some  amazing, some not so. This Sunday’s awards were dominated by the news of Beyoncé’s pregnancy,  Lady Gaga turning up as her alter-ego – a man named Jo, and Katie Perry wearing four different outfits – everyone bad!

Here are some  of the looks I really liked..and a few I didn’t.

Beyoncé looked beautiful in a sari style dress by Lanvin. This reminded me of the green dress that JLo once worn to the Oscars, and I think it screamed style and elegance whilst covering that little baby bump. The colour looked great on her, and I also loved those chandelier earrings that added just enough bling to the outfit.

Vanessa Hudgens also looked totally gorgeous in her 1920s inspired look. With this silver dress from Candie’s Couture,  and hair in 1920s bangs, she looked like she was channelling the ghosts of Jean Harlow, and the look of Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants.  Vanessa is someone usually off my style radar, I’m not impressed with faux hippies, but this look totally transformed her. A+

Zoe Saldana and Katie Holmes both went down the short route. Katie went for a simple fit and flare style dress from Azzedine Alaia that flattered her figure. I loved the cute addition of desert boots to this outfit. Zoe wore a chic black cocktail dress from Barbara Bui that she accessorised with  the hot new trend for the new season – snake-skin sandals.

Adele went for her usual 1960s diva style that again just looked so perfect for her. I loved the Burberry Brit dress that she chose, and her bouffant style hair just looked impeccable. Adele flies the flag for simple, yet elegant designs that always exude ladylike sophistication. She stands out from the Snooki-fest glitter for all the right reasons!

And a few not so good looks…

Kelly Rowland is an absolutely gorgeous women, with a knockout figure. What could possibly go wrong? Well wearing a dress that gives you the appearance of needing a bikini wax pretty sharpish is one thing that did go wrong. I don’t know if the hairy bit on this dress was a furry sporran, but it just looked rude – 1970s rude if you need clarification. Still, here hair looked glorious.

Lady Gaga turned up as Example!

Kim Kardashian looked like she had been poured into her showgirl style dress..and that some of her missed! When she gets it right she looks so beautiful, but this dress is just a little bit trampy. I particularly hated the back with its flesh coloured mesh panel.

Nicki Minaj dressed as an explosion at Toys R Us. Totally bonkers!

Style Icon of the Month August – Lady Gaga.

I have always admired Lady Gaga has an icon of style. But rather like the  way you admire Erno Goldfinger‘s tower blocks, but wouldn’t want to live in them, I admired Gaga’s crazy meat dresses, sequined lobster hats and crazy shoes, but could never see anyone else wearing them. But this is the month when I’ve had to say – Gaga – you look great, and I would definitely wear that dress!

This seems to be the month when Gaga has grown into a beautiful lady, and it seems to be with some thanks to Donatella Versace. Donatella gave Gaga access to the Versace archives earlier this Summer. At first this led to a series of those early 1990s garish coloured silk blouses and skirts, but lately Gaga has opted for a series of shift dresses with pencil straight skirts, one shouldered evening dresses and block colour gowns that just seem to enhance her looks and her figure. She is making a fashion impression without causing style controversy – and I, for one, really like it.

There have been a few dissenters about the Lady’s new look – is Gaga morphing into Donatella? Isn’t this a bit conservative for Gaga – is this better suited to the kooky – but not too Kooky Gwen Stefani. My answer would be an emphatic no! Gaga has  looked great this month, and the blue suit – blue tights-nipple patch combo proves she’s not going to be buying a twinset and pearls anytime soon. But it has been lovely to see the Lady wearing something that makes her look like a Lady, rather than some mad invention!

Not quite conservative yet!

Jian of London’s Stardust press launch – gemstones, manicures and cupcakes!

Last Thursday saw the  glorious launch of Jian of London’s stunning Stardust jewellery collection in the sumptuous surroundings of Four London’s beautiful Conduit Street Salon. This event combined exquisite jewellery with a host of pampering treats and lashings of champagne, canapes and cupcakes.

The event was to showcase the stunning jewellery designs of Jane Massie and Jian of London before the official launch in September. I had a chance to be properly introduced to the brand, which only launched in the UK three years ago. Jane explained to me  that previous to this, she had lived in the USA,  and that she had found the UK market to be quite different to the US market – in America ‘the blingier – the better’ seems to apply, but the UK are very partial to small, delicate designs. Jane explained to me that she had always had a love of jewellery, but wanted to work with precious stones and metals rather than simply creating pieces of costume jewellery. Jane spoke with passion about her love for simple, elegant lines in jewellery, and this is plain to see in the designs. The stone is always the star, and is showcased to perfection in a series of clean, elegant settings that enhance the stone, rather than drawing attention away from it.

Of course, this being a glittering launch, there were no shortage of glamorous guests enjoying the gems and the beauty treatments. OK TV‘s Josie Gibson and Sian Welby, Danielle Brown and Lizzie Cundy were amongst the guests who enjoyed manicures courtesy of  the lovely Samantha Cunningham from Spa Barbies, who is frankly a nail genius(anyone who can make my nails look good…),  colour consultations by Four London, Eve Taylor Aroma wax arm and hand massages and spiritual readings. The cupcakes from Cute as a cupcake were divine, as were the canapes, and the whole event had a very relaxed girlie atmosphere that everyone seemed to enjoy.
