With the opening of Spiceal Street this Thursday, Birmingham is about to become a real destination when it comes to good food. And Fashion-Mommy was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of what you can expect when I was invited to a pre-opener taste testing session at one of the new restaurants, Browns Brasserie.
Serving a mixture of classic and modern dishes, platters-to-share, pasta, salads, sides and puddings. Browns truly offers something for every taste. The wine list is good, and whilst I was desperate to sample the Bellini’s, my husband was overjoyed to see Peroni on draught.
The decor is smartly sophisticated with a mixture of high and low tables, for enjoying drinks or a meal. A piano adds to the feel of sophistication, and also to the retro forties feel. You can almost hear Frank Sinatra crooning ‘It’s one for my baby…’ under the soft lighting.
My party had what will be the best seats in the house, upstairs overlooking the stunning St Martins in the Bullring Church. Our waitress Alex was lovely, warm, friendly and attentive, and catered for our every need. We were given time to peruse the menu and then chose our starters, I chose a Caesar salad. This was perfect, crisp lettuce, a good amount of Parmesan, and salt and pepper croutons my husband couldn’t resist trying.
For main course I went for traditional fish and chips. Alex said this was a good choice, and indeed it was absolutely beautiful, with the softest fish that just melted in the mouth. The attention to detail was impressive, tartar sauce served in shot glasses, garden peas crushed and minted. The rest of my party were equally impressed, steak was perfectly cooked for my husband, and served with gorgeous chunky chips, my mom enjoyed a fish pie that she declared to be supremely tasty, whilst my dad, notoriously hard to please in the food department, was very impressed with the lamb dish which was served with pearl barley and sweet onions.
Nothing was left by the end of the meal, which was unfortunate, as the dessert menu sounded amazing and contained my favourite dessert – sticky toffee pudding. There was just time for coffee before it was time to release the babysitter.
I truly enjoyed my first visit to Browns, the food was great, the service impeccable and the atmosphere warm and inviting. I would recommend a visit to anyone, and am already planning a return trip to sample those desserts!
Browns Bar and Brasserie opens in Spiceal Street, Birmingham on Friday 25th November.
