Arcadia Press day S/S 2012 – Burton and Topman

January 8th, 2012

The Arcadia Press Day showed that men’s fashion is about to turn very interesting. With brighter fabrics and sporty themes to tie in with London 2012, and even a touch of Frankie Cocozza and Gary Barlow styling thrown in, Spring/Summer 2012 is about extremes, from sharp tailoring to festival themes.

There were definitely lots of talking points, knits were thicker than usual, perhaps reflecting that our Summer’s aren’t what they used to be, whilst shorts were cut much shorter, designed to be worn with Aztec and Hawaiian style t-shirts for a beach hippy sort of look. Colours were primary, with colour block t-shirts and sporty duffle bags. And there were also the shorts suits, more tailored shorts and blazers designed to be worn together, in striped chambrays and cottons – interesting, but not for the faint hearted. This has been a huge catwalk trend, so it will be interesting to see how this translates to the High Street.

And then there was smart tailoring. Inspired by one of my man crushes, the always impeccable Gary Barlow, this was a über smart look. Bar collar shirts, and buttoned down lapels were much in evidence, along with three-piece suits that include the Barlowesque waistcoats. There were some exquisite details on the shirts, including black piping, and wider lapels a la Vivienne Westwood.
