After the BAFTAS, we had the Grammys. Another red carpet, with a slightly (ahem) different aesthetic. Because if the toast of Hollywood were sparkling on a rain-soaked red carpet in London, the creme de la creme of the music industry were rocking and shocking in LA.
And there were some shocking outfits, not the least of which was Adele. Now, we have all been crying out for her to add a little colour to her wardrobe, and when you hear red and pink Valentino you have to believe she has made the perfect choice. Wrong! Adele’s dress was the worst kind of 1970s candlewick bedspread, so terrible I was crying for her to call Christopher Bailey from the nearest toilet cubicle and say ‘HELP!’. It wasn’t just Adele having a slightly 70s off night. Katy Perry wore the sort of dress that Olive from ‘On the Buses’ sported on ‘date night’ with Arthur. That bad. It was too green, too tight and just too much. And don’t even get me started on JLo, who seemed to have adopted Angelina Jolie’s leg for the night…
But there were some good looks too. Here are my favourites.
I hated Carly Rae Jephson’s Abba make-up, but this was a glorious dress from Roberto Cavalli which shimmered and shone as she moved.
Florence Welch wore an unbelievable dress from Givenchy in the emerald-green she was just born to wear. Although the spikes were a little bit ‘Dinosaur’ this was just such a bold and interesting choice from the always exciting Florence.
How excited was I to see that the super fierce Beyoncé had not only gone for something cool and edgy for the Grammys, but that the monochrome jumpsuit had been designed by Osman. Talk about ‘Big Up Birmingham’. Loved the hair too.
And then there was Rihanna. And if you could tear your eyes away from that exquisite face, you were probably blown away by the beauty of the red Azzedine Alaia gown. This was the most romantic dress, in colour, in the floatiness of the fabric, and the full-skirted design.
I’ve already mentioned Katy Perry’s dress, which I clicked the dislike button for, but Katy’s friend, ‘Girls’ star and Kate Middleton lookalike, Alison Williams, looked totally incredible in her Art Deco style Kaufmanfranco column dress that was apparently made from black diamonds.
I’m loving Nicole Kidman’s style recently, and after a fabulous SAG awards dress, she continues to impress with her choices. I thought she looked fabulous in a delicate gold column dress from Gucci. I’m still admiring her poker straight 1990s hair too.
