The summer may be fast coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stock up on some of this year’s hot weather favourites before you head out on that late summer break abroad or as the season’s sales hit. Summer shoe trends stay relatively similar each year, with a few fun twists thrown in to go with that year’s wardrobe crazes. Here’s a look at what’s been hot on beach feet this year:
Not everyone is cut out to wear high heels, so wedge heels come as a much needed alternative this season. Wedge heels are known for their provision of height with more security than a stiletto heel or similar – a great summer buy for dressy outdoor events where you would usually face the frustrations of your heel getting stuck in the grass. This summer you’ll find many wedge heel options, from stylish wedged trainers to strappy court shoes.
Another unusual alternative to the high heel, flatforms (otherwise known as ‘creepers’) first made an appearance in Autumn-Winter 2012 and are now being touted with a new summer twist. Look out for canvas topped and bright coloured flatforms that can be worn from day to night.
Some footwear options never go out of style when it comes to the summer and gladiator sandals are one such a design. With origins as far back as the Romans, these practical sandals are designed for everyday wear but have become a super fashionable choice too. Choose from simple brown, black or beige leather for the traditional feel or opt for a more glamorous twist on the Gladiator, embellished with diamantes or studs.
For a fresh take on the Gladiator, look out for the similar caged heel sandal which has a striking strappy design but usually features an exposed heel.
If you love a bit of nostalgia, go back to the nineties with this season’s jelly shoes fad. Originally designed as beach shoes for children, these simple plastic designs can be seen on the toes of tweens and more mature fashionistas. Jelly shoes are a playful summer choice, though not always the most comfortable (especially when you get water and sand between your toes), with neon colours a popular Jelly feature. Team with a maxi dress or denim shorts and a fringed white tee.
When you need a more substantial summer shoe, practical for walking and all-day comfort, choose the latest trainer trend – hi-top boots. These flat or wedge designs are a modern take on sporting sneakers with, as their name suggests, a snug and supportive hi-top ankle. A great example of summer’s sports luxe vibe, hi-top trainers come in many colours and finishes, from sophisticated nudes to urban brights.
If heels and playful plastics aren’t your thing, suede loafers are summer’s more refined design. A classic and mature option, these flat shoes commonly feature fringe or tassels. Team with a blouse and shorts or a floaty feminine midi dress.
