West Side Story is coming to The New Alexandra Theatre

March 26th, 2014

It is probably the best musical of all, and certainly one that changed the nature of them, bringing the musical kicking and screaming into the 20th Century. And now it has embarked on a nationwide tour, and will be hitting Birmingham next week. Yes, it could only be the Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein masterpiece, ‘West Side Story’, the show that transferred the doomed romance of Romeo and Juliet to the brutal gangs of New York.

This new production of “WEST SIDE STORY” features the entire original Jerome Robbins choreography, and has already played to sell-out audiences around the world. It will now be coming to Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre for a three-week run that is destined to be one of the Midlands theatre events of the year.

“WEST SIDE STORY” was first performed in 1957, and changed the perceptions of musical theatre forever. Before West Side Story, the musical was considered a charming, family friendly form of entertainment, but West Side Story brought virile sex appeal, high-octane drama and tragedy to the mix. “WEST SIDE STORY” is set on Manhattan’s Upper West Side where teenage gang rivalry and feuds fill the air with sinister tension. The gang rivalry becomes all the more apparent when Tony, a boy from the right side of the tracks, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the rival gang’s leader and Puerto Rican into the bargain. What follows is a simple love story overshadowed by relentless violence and hatred, and ultimately tragedy. The music that helps to tell the story have become modern standards, they include ‘Maria’, ‘Tonight’, ‘Somewhere’, ‘America’ and ‘I Feel Pretty’.
