Fun ways for you and your child to stay fit this Autumn



As Winter starts to draw in, and the days get colder, it would be very easy to opt for the choice made by bears and just hibernate until Spring comes around again. But a drop in temperature and darker days shouldn’t mean that you stay in the warm, or chill in front of the television. There are plenty of ways of keeping fit and active with your family this Autumn, and some of these even take place indoors.

Here are some suggestions for how you can keep yourselves fit and healthy this Autumn, and have a lot of fun into the bargain.

Dance, Dance, Dance

Autumn is Strictly season in my house, with Saturday night’s being spent transfixed to the television to see whether it will be Debbie or Alexandra on top of the leader board this week. But as well as being the perfect form of Saturday night entertainment, dancing is a great way to exercise and keep fit. Salsa classes are proving very popular, and even my local tearoom now has ballroom and old time dancing sessions that are well attended. Ballet Classes are another option, again they have a timeless popularity, which may be down to the gorgeous ballet costumes, or maybe Noel Streatfeild’s Ballet Shoes book. Street Dancing is another way to buy into the dance craze, one that is proving to be a smash hit with boys and girls who admire Diversity.

Bounce!

If dancing is not your cup of tea, then maybe you might be tempted to bounce. Trampoline parks and indoor spaces like Airspace are creating huge areas for those who love to trampoline, and, as a form of fitness, it is hard to beat. It is perfect for the whole family, can be done indoors and definitely allows you to break out a sweat whilst having great fun too. Trampolining has also become a very popular option for older children’s birthday parties, so if you have a child with an Autumn or Winter birthday, this could be ideal.

Get on Your Bike

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year, as the leaves change and fall from the trees, our parks are at their most prettiest. With this in mind another great form of exercise is a family bike ride through a local park, or following a nature trail. I’m lucky enough to live on the path of the Wyrley and Essington Canal which has lots of gorgeous trails and routes. Simply plot your route, make sure your bikes are safe and roadworthy, and the world is your oyster.

Use your local Baths

Swimming is another activity that is all weather and lots of fun, whilst also addressing the serious safety aspect of making children safe around water. Many local authorities now have free swimming for children under the age of 16 (although some have opted out of this, so check out your local baths first.) I love swimming,and think there is nothing better than enjoying the pool, and then getting a hot chocolate afterwards.
