Your Five – fashion and beauty at Bullring

Your Five is a special fashion and beauty showcase and preview organised by the Bullring shopping centre twice yearly. The idea is a personalised, one to one appointment where you are able to talk about the key trends for the season, and are shown a range of pieces that fit the trend and are available from Bullring stores. The items chosen scan a range of budgets and stores, with Ted Baker, Oasis, New Look, Reiss and Miss Selfridge all represented this time around.  You can choose your favourites from each catagory and they are photographed and then sent to your email address, with stockist details and prices so that you can always shop for them at a later date.

I was feeling very ropey this weekend, suffering from a cold and streaming eyes, but I made my way to look at the key season trends that Bullring had selected. With Winter clearly in mind, coats were a big talking point, and I loved so many of those selected, with beautiful wool coats in soft shades from both Reiss and Ted Baker, but my favourite was the Crombie style coat in animal print from New Look – definitely added to my shopping list. Ankle boots were the shoe focus, with metallics being very popular, but I was more drawn to the coloured suede versions from Clarks and New Look.

The trouser trend is moving away from skinny fits and into stylish wide leg styles that evoke the 1930s and 1970s. I loved the Topshop bottle green cropped versions that I think would look stunning worn Jane Fonda ‘Klute’ style, with a skinny polo neck and knee high boots. The skirt selection was also just stunning, with pleats, net, tulle, leather and metallics all available in beautiful abundance. I love that so many of the skirts are knee and midi length, and just loved the elegance of the full skirted variety.

As well as fashion, Your 5 also looks at beauty, with a focus on a red lip. This is something I tend not to wear as I never think red suits me – as much as I love it. However, I was really pleased with the colour chosen for me, red with a more coral tint from Chanel (148 I think) and it certainly made me look again at my aversion to lip pencil and red lips.

Late Summer Holiday Style

With the last bank hoilday of the year just around the corner, and with many people opting for a late Summer break, Summer holiday packing and wardrobes are still a hot topic of conversation. But with more people opting to travel hand luggage only in order to avoid the extra charges and the long waits at the baggage carousel, savvy packing and versatile pieces have become more important than ever.

Derbyshire based David Nieper are a fashion company who understand this. With a collection that is fiercely ‘Made in Britain’, both designed and created in Derbyshire, the company has worked hard to create pieces for a travel collection that are multi-functional, and non-crease (no need to pack that travel iron). Add in the fact that they are elegant style classics and you get pieces that will serve you for vacations for years to come.

Here are some pieces from the current travel collection that caught my eye.

The Uncrushable Jersey Dress

Uncrushable Jersey Dress £115

This dress is a total no-brainer. This is a soft, stretch jersey that will not crease – it can literally be scrunched up and thrown into your case. This dress comes in two lengths, but, for me, the maxi length is classic elegance. It would work for both day, with some toe post sandals, or evening, teamed with a strappy sandal and silver jewellery.

The uncrushable skirt

Uncrushable Crepe Skirt £89

Another great holiday piece. White is always a great choice when you have a suntan, and, as you can see from the picture, this skirt can serve you well worn over your swimsuit for a bit of sightseeing. Add a silky camisole in classic black for a retro monochrome look that will hark back to all those chic 1950s Riviera looks.

The Essential Soft Jersey Vest

I love this piece – it would go with everything, from Capri pants to a pencil skirt, or just worn casually with cut off jeans. The straps are so perfect for actually covering your bra straps, and this is also double fronted to avoid see-thru moments. Just a total hero piece.

Luxury Swimsuit

This super glamorous swimsuit is the height of poolside glamour, but is also totally sensible. The design is perfect for covering up ‘jelly belly’ as the draping is super flattering, whilst the legs are classic cut. You could easily add a skater skirt or a pair of shorts over this for cocktails at the poolside bar.

Pure Silk and Cotton Kaftan

A beautiful silk kaftan is a versatile piece that has had a real surge in popularity in 2016. This is thanks to fashionista’s like Rihanna, who have shown that they can be a cool and stylish choice for City wear as well as for the traditional beach cover up.

What do you pack in your hand luggage only case?

Fan Day Friday – Earning Your Stripes

When it comes to fashion, and especially Summer fashion, there is a style that consistently pops up in my wardrobe as the epitome of my style, and that is stripes. I love a stripe, I ignore all the perceived wisdom about who can wear stripes, and what sort of stripes you should wear depending on your body shape, and I just embrace the stripe for all it is worth.

A stripe is an enigma. It is a bit of fun (think candy stripes) that can also look super classic and stylish (pinstripe anyone). It can be described as nautical in navy and white, or French inspired – what is more iconic than a Breton stripe? It can come in literally any combination, from Chanel style monochrome to colour clashes, and frankly looks fabulous either way. I posted a picture wearing a much loved Jaeger dress in the sunshine on Monday and had so many comments saying the same thing ‘you can’t be stripes for Summer.’.

Most of my celebrity style icons have had a style moment wearing stripes. Alexa Chung wears stripes with panache, keeping it simplistic with shorts or jeans for a carefree summer look.  Clemence Poesy works stripes into a red carpet look by adding a feathered skirt.  Margot Robbie shows how beautiful stripes can look on the red carpet in a glamorous, monochrome evening gown, whilst Kate Bosworth and Emma Stone use stripes as part of a more tailored look. Laura Bailey mismatches prints and textures into a stylish look with a striped jumper at it’s heart.

Stripes are everywhere in stores this summer, and I have selected five of my favourite key pieces if you want to add a stripe to your summer wardrobe. Remember, they also make a great transitional piece so will still work when Autumn comes around.
