Launer Bags and Champagne – Selfridges celebrates The Queen at 90

This weekend sees Queen Elizabeth II celebrate her official 90th birthday. Although her actual birthday was in April, June is the official birthday month, with Trooping the Colour the celebration of this ‘birthday’. That means the lady is an honourary Gemini, which can only be a good thing. (Can you guess what my birth sign is…)

Ahead of a weekend of celebrations, beacons, parties and all round jolly happenings, Selfridges has shone a spotlight on one of The Queen’s favourite brands. When she see Her Majesty carrying those very neat and highly chic handbags, there is a 99% chance that it will be from Launer London. These leather totes are beautiful leather creations that are often perfectly matched to her outfits, and have a timeless appeal a little bit like the lady herself. Launer London bags are not cheap, they are most definitely a luxury item that may require you to remortgage your house in order to afford them. But they are classically elegant, a bag you might be using forever (or at least until you’re 90 if Elizabeth ll is anything to go by.

Celebrate in Style

If you are planning your own celebration this weekend, Selfridges have put together a selection of hampers, gift boxes and afternoon tea selections that could help your party go with a bang (or maybe a hic! – there’s a lot of wine included.) My favourite has to be the Prosecco Celebration trio, because frankly one bottle is never enough, and, as I already mentioned sharing a (honourary) star sign with her Madge, I think this weekend is close enough to my birthday to start my own personal celebrations.

Happy Anniversary William and Kate

A year ago I was sitting in a caravan in Wales ignoring the sunshine outside, with my eyes glued to a telly screen. I wasn’t alone. Millions, if not billions of people around the World were sitting in apprehension, waiting for the moment when Kate Middleton would step from her car and reveal her wedding dress to the waiting world.

That moment, when it was revealed that the dress was Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, made the fashion world gasp in delight. The dress was everything we dreamed it would be and more, which are words that could be ascribed to Kate, now the Duchess of Cambridge, herself.

Of course, the wedding was a retailers dream, with merchandise of every variety emblazoning everything from Poundland to Liberty. With the 1st anniversary, we are facing the first special occasion in what promises to be a very special Royal year. New items related to Kate and William have, of course, been released. Here are just a few of the gifts and collectors items for lovers of William and Kate.

Kate – The best looks from the best dressed women in Britain.

Finally, a respected magazine gives the opinion on the Duchess of Cambridge’s style that many of us mere mortals hold. Kate has been named as Number One in the Harper’s Bazaar best dressed of 2011 poll. The magazine says ‘Catherine’s incredible style evolution has gripped us all. She gave us the year’s – if not the century’s – most thrilling fashion moment at the royal wedding, and is shaping up as an amazing ambassador for British designers and the high street.’

I am thrilled at this news. Kate has proved that by mixing the High Street and High end designers, you can create a wardrobe that is full of instant classics that can take you to any occasion. Tie in the fabulous  recycling that has seen outfits re-emerge  years after they were originally worn, and you get a style icon for the 21st century.

Kate has proved to be a great  advert for both British design and the great British High Street. From Alexander McQueen to Roksanda Ilincic, from Amanda Wakeley to Lock and  Company, from Burberry to Catherine Walker, British design is  being championed for its classic, elegant style. Throw in outfits from Reiss, LK Bennett and Zara, and you get the makings of an icon that can shift a million dresses just from one appearance.

Elegant, beautiful and always impeccable,  Kate has proved that star quality isn’t the confine of those who live to strut in sparkly short  frocks. Here are some of my highlights from the Duchess of style.
