Grammy Awards 2017 – Key Looks

The Grammy Awards were dominated by two, very glamorous ladies last night, with Beyonce and Adele fighting it out for the biggest awards. The two ladies of song were also eagerly awaited on the red carpet too, although only Adele made an appearance. She was, however, joined by some of the most stylish ladies in music, making the red carpet event interesting to say the least, although, in the case of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, this was for all the wrong reasons.

There were some lovely looks though, with many of them giving us a sense of deja vu. The lovely Tori  Kelly had me thinking of Madonna in her ‘Like a Virgin’ era with her blonde tumbling curls, I loved her Spanish influenced green dress too, a great colour and the style was very pretty. Kat Graham’s dazzling stripes were so right for the Grammy’s and her sleek styling was pretty perfect too.

I loved Beyonce’s red sparkle, has ever a baby bump looked so perfect? But I couldn’t quite make my mind up about Adele’s dress. The colour was gorgeous, and I love the sheer sleeves, but was just unsure about the wrap style front detail – a layer too many for me. Paris Jackson showed she was all grown up in a disco style sari dress, and then there was JLo, super beautiful in Ralph and Russo, but I would love the dress even more without the candy floss style ruffle around the neck.

Bonnie McKee’s sequined suit was fabulous, a really good choice on a night when there was a tribute to the kings of disco, the Bee Gees, whilst Katherine McPhee was stunning in a black column dress with a sequin bodice.

And then, of course, there was Lady Gaga, and I have to say that, for once, words fail me. I described it as Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, and don’t think I can really better that – a little bit bondage, a little bit porn and totally Gaga.

Whose look did you love from the Grammy Awards?

Style Focus – Adele

I don’t mind admitting that I’m a little obsessed with Adele at the moment. Hello is an absolute belter of a song, one I keep singing in my kitchen. (Well, at least attempting to sing, I’m more Oh! hell than Adele.) She’s breaking records left, right and centre, and seems to be totally comfortable in her own skin. And, she does all that and looks totally incredible, a complete icon of beauty and style. As I said, I’m obsessed.

I honestly believe that if Adele wasn’t plus size, all those titles and comments about being the most beautiful woman in the world would be directed in her direction. As it is, she is a total poster girl for the fact that beauty does not have to mean size eight and skinny, but can be a completely different package altogether. And her style, shining in the likes of British designers like Jenny Packham (as she did on the Graham Norton show) is impeccable. She has taken all the best bits of retro 1960s glamour and beauty, the big hair a la Nancy Sinatra, the thick lashes a la Claudia Cardinale, and have turned this into 21st style.

I love the fact she, like an early Angelina Jolie, favours black above all other colours. You get the feeling that this has nothing to do with it being ‘flattering’, and everything to do with the fact that it is dramatic, and looks amazing against her glorious red hair. Off duty, she is effortlessy chic, making choices that combine the practical with the drop dead gorgeous. She is, quite simply, a goddess, and literally makes all the other ‘pop’ poppets look a little bit obvious and trying too hard. If you need any further evidence, just check out the gallery of photographs below. She is utter perfection and a super talent too.

X Factor Fashion – Week 2 Tulisa, Nicole…and Ella Henderson.

Week 2 of the X Factor proved that Tulisa can really pull a fabulous look out of the bag when it is called for. With the elegant and beautiful Nicole Scherzinger sitting on the same panel, Tulisa knows that the style bar has been raised – let’s face it, with her bone structure and catlike eyes, Nicole would look great in an earthen sack. But Tulisa is a girl who can always spring a style surprise (albeit not always a good one…) and last night was one of those nights.

Tulisa chose a classy white draped dress with leather panels from New York designer Alexander Wang. There was just so much to admire about this dress. The shift style bodice was very elegant and ultra flattering, whilst Tulisa is one of those lucky people who look really great in white. I loved the draping detail that added a Grecian style to proceedings, something later followed by Jade Ellis and Ella Henderson – this was a really neat touch.

Definitely one of my favourite Tulisa dresses on the X Factor – ever!

Nicole went for a futuristic silver number from Inbar Spector. I don’t dislike this, but this is a case of actually wishing the skirt was a little longer making this into a sexy pencil style. The intricate design is visually striking, and certainly made a statement when Nicole was behind the desk, but it looked a little too elaborate compared to Tulisa’s pared down chic.

But while all the style attention has been focused on the two leading ladies, 16-year-old Ella Henderson has been quietly emerging as a new style star. While Louis likens her retro glamorous looks to Adele (and says this as if this was an insult???) Ella has shown a sophistication beyond her years by wearing beautiful timeless dresses with a fabulous beehive hairstyle. This week she looked simply beautiful in the Haylei maxidress from Ted Baker, bringing to mind Princesses from films like Jason and the Argonauts – totally gorgeous.

The Sunday Live show was a mixed bag. Tulisa opted for a Pucci dress that failed to deliver results. In a monochrome print, this was a full length dress that would’ve been better as a pencil dress or a  mini. Although I loved the twist detail,  the print was just too busy and this was a dress that was clearly too mature for the 20-something Tulisa, and may have actually been a better choice if worn by Nicole.

If Tulisa took the style honours on Saturday night, then Nicole was the clear winner on Sunday. Her Kristen Aadnevik dress was both floaty and rock chick, with leather accents, lace and chiffon in one very pretty package. I loved the way this dress merged the masculine leather with the softness of the chiffon, and also loved that Nicole left her hair loose and flowing in pretty waves.
