My favourite looks from the Tony Awards

Last night saw the ‘Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre’. Of course, you probably know them as the Tony Awards, which recognise achievement in live Broadway theatre. This year it was a very glamorous affair, with British interests well rewarded with a best actress award for Helen Mirren for ‘The Audience’ (playing The Queen is definitely lucky for Helen, after an Oscar for The Queen.) Young British actor Alex Sharp was also awarded for his role in one of my favourite plays ‘The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time’.

There was some seriously, jaw-droppingly gorgeous looks on display, with Jennifer Lopez in particular, moving away from the skin and bead dresses she has been wearing of late, and reminding me why she used to be one of my favourite best dressed ladies. Her blue, strapless gown and 1940s style hair was pure Old Hollywood, elegant and exquisite in equal measure.

There were other great looks too. Helen Mirren is always immaculate. Her dress was stunning, a lovely lace confection with wide sleeves and a deep v neckline. I loved Ruth Wilson in hot pink, whilst Amanda Seyfried showed that a cocktail dress can look appropriate on the red carpet, providing it is baroque and ornate in style.

There is one final dress that I wanted to mention. Blurred Lines model turned actress Emily RatajKowski wore a navy Marc Jacobs dress that was almost identical to one that had been worn by Claire Danes at the 2015 Screen Actors Guild awards. I didn’t like the dress on Claire, mainly because the green colour and tight neckline, teamed with the belt gave it a GI Jane look which just didn’t work. On Emily, the navy shade, and less fussy neckline makes this dress a winner.

Toronto Film Festival – Best Looks

The Toronto film festival is one of those that often falls off my radar, but not this year. It seems that every day I have been gasping over one celebrity outfit or another. To put it quite simply, some of Hollywood’s finest are in Canada promoting upcoming films, and pulling all the stops out when it comes to choosing their outfits.

Kiera Knightley has been on a roll, wearing one stunning dress after another. I’ve chosen a couple of my favourites here, but every single dress has been just beautiful. Another Brit girl, Felicity Jones, continues to show why I mentioned her as one to watch stylewise. With a nod to retro styling, and her delectable co-star Eddie Redmayne on her arm, she looks picture perfect, young and fresh, on every occasion.

Other stars who are shining on the Toronto red carpet include the always reliable Kate Bosworth, Jessica Chastain showing why prom styles are not just for teenagers, and the ageless Julianne Moore. And, showing that style is not just about a great dress, Rose Byrne goes for mannish tailoring and looks impeccable and super sexy too.

Here are all my favourite looks from Toronto, along with a few ideas on how to get the looks for yourselves.

Style Focus – Samantha Barks

She has certainly been one of the breakout stars of 2013. With a stunning performance as Eponine in the movie version of Les Miserables, Samantha Barks has ensured that she is one to watch.Sam’s role in Les Miserables followed on from her acclaimed performance in the stage version, which continues to be a huge hit with fans (you can get information about Les Miserables tickets available from Big Ticket Shop UK if you fancy watching the live stage version). Samantha has also started to garner column inches for her impeccable fashion sense and a hot romance with male model de jour David Gandy. Not bad for a girl who finished third in the BBC search for Nancy ‘I’d do anything’.

In February this year, Sam was named Breakthrough Performance at the Elle Style Awards, always the sign of a stylish and talented star. She then followed this up with an eye-catching appearance at the Oscars, wearing a super sexy plunge front Valentino dress that ensured column inches for the Oscar ceremony debutante.

But the Oscar dress was not a one-off, throughout the promotional tours, premieres and award ceremonies promoting Les Mis, Sam more than held her own against her co-stars, and noted formidable fashionista’s Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried. In fact, on many occasions, she totally outshone them.

But don’t assume that Samantha’s look is just about Hollywood glamour, or that her wardrobe is just stuffed with designer gowns. One of the things I love most about this lady and her style is that she also supports the High Street. Reiss is a particular fave, whilst her summer festival wardrobe featured a smattering of Oasis in the shape of a pretty floral blouse.

With a starring role in a new Dracula film coming up soon, expect to see Samantha Barks at the top of Acting and Best dressed lists in the next few years. With talent and a wardrobe to die for, she is definitely one to watch.
