Clements Ribeiro Swan – quirky prints and AMAZING ambassadors

The wait is very almost over. The most anticipated plus size fashion collection EVER will hit stores and online on May 16th. Of course I’m talking about the latest collaboration between Evans and the fabulous design duo that is Clements Ribeiro, the collection that has already set Twitter alight and is set to have long queues and online meltdown once it finally goes live. For this is the collection that shows that plus size fashion can be forward thinking, uniquely quirky, and a whole lot of fun to boot.

For fans of previous Clements Ribeiro collections, this one is definitely a departure. The emphasis is on holiday and daywear, rather than the seriously luxuriant tea dresses and evening wear we last saw from the duo. There are still florals, but these are now large daisy prints and acidic brights. There are still prints, but now the influence of Surrealism, of Dali and Schiaparelli is apparent, especially in the gorgeously kitsch Lobster print that is showcased so wonderfully by ‘Arched Eyebrow’ blogger Bethany Rutter and Callie Thorpe, who writes ‘From the corners of the curve’  . And there is a swimsuit, a retro shaped gorgeous object that becomes totally sensuous when poured over the pin-up girl curves of modern-day Bettie Page, Georgina Horne, the face and figure behind ‘Fuller figure, Fuller Bust’.

Georgina Horne is stunning in this retro swimsuit.

From 1950s style shirtwaister dresses, to candy striped t-shirts that just say ‘Seaside’, lip printed outsize t-shirt dresses designed to be worn in a slouchy, sporty way, to graphic prints and zebra’s, this is a collection designed to be noticed. But what is making the collection even more special are the ladies who have been chosen to represent it. One crititcism of plus size brands is that they are prone to using models at the ‘tiny’ end of the plus size spectrum, 6ft goddesses who are as alien to the average person on the street as Kate Moss is, even if their clothes labels do say size 16.

So it is a brilliant move by Evans and Clements Ribeiro to look at the super-stylish, totally influential plus size fatshionistas who set Twitter and the blogging world alight with their thoughts on style, and their own, pretty amazing wardrobes. Step forward the aforementioned Georgina and Bethany and Callie, and also add into the mix US über bloggers Nicolette Mason and the ‘Curvy Fashionista’ Marie Denee, and you have woman who we can identify with, wearing clothes that would also be perfect for you and me.

The Adele Dress from Swan By Clements Ribeiro

When I was asked to pick my favourite piece from the Swan collection by Clements Ribeiro for Evans, I must admit to being truly spoilt for choice. I adore so many of the looks, including the beautiful Salome dress, which is still my true favourite, but I also found myself wishing that I tried on the Grace dress when I’d had the opportunity at the Bloggers day, and wondering if this dress might be the perfect every occasion dress for the festive season.

The background to the Grace dress is simple. Clements Ribeiro are one of the singer Adele’s favourite design duos, so much so that she asked them to create a dress for the 2012 Grammy Awards where she was expected, quite rightly as it turned out, to sweep the board. Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro created a wonderful dress in Adele’s trademark black, a dress that combined lace, mesh and pretty polka dots. The dress was heralded a success by everyone, with Adele being named one of the best dressed on the night.

Clements Ribeiro have now created a version of the Adele dress as part of the Swan collection. Christened Grace, this dress is not totally identical, amendments have been made. The underlining is now nude, the skirt is both shorter and slimmer. But the recognisable lurex spot detail is there, as is the lace of the skirt. This dress is chic cocktail hour dress that skims the body to give the wearer instant va va voom.

Loving the back detail.

I love that this dress is so covered up, yet still so sexy. The sleeves are perfect if you are not happy to reveal your arms, whilst that exposed back zip is a really seductive touch. The length of the skirt is also perfect, making this a real cocktail hour piece. And I love the fact that this dress really requires no further accessorising, high heels and a touch of lippie are all this piece needs to be red carpet ready.

It’s here! Swan by Clements Ribeiro for Evans

It’s the launch that us plus sized ladies have been waiting for. The first collaboration between a High Street store and a fashion forward, High End, design team. Yes, Swan by Clements Ribeiro has finally arrived at Evans after weeks of anticipation. And it is truly worth the wait.

Inspired by Clements Ribeiro fan Adele, with pieces being named Adele and 21 amongst others, there are also nods to ‘Mad Men’ with Joan and Betty dresses. There are lots of prints in the collection, ranging from ditsy tiny florals to larger floral and stripe combinations like the Adele tunic. I love how sequins and lace have also been incorporated, making this a very glamorous collaboration.

But it’s not all about dresses. There are pretty trousers printed with floral prints and matchstick prints that will be essential come summer for their loose wearability. The collection has a very vintage feel, particularly 1940s, with broad shoulders, cinched in waists and knee lengths

Commenting on the exciting collaboration Inacio Ribeiro said: “For our first range we addressed the different body shapes, with styles which are accessible but modern, with an emphasis on prints and femininity. It was our starting point, understanding different proportions and different needs behind a desire for fashion that is not different from the
high fashion consumer. Far from being apologetic or patronising, we celebrated curves and voluptuousness.”

I think the whole collection is a triumph. It addresses the different body shapes in a series of eye-catching designs, and remembers the things that can be important when dressing a fuller figure – flattering and enhancing the body rather than shrouding it, giving us sleeves and a mixture of lengths to choose from.

So, now, in its full glory, here are my favourite pieces from the Swan by Clements Ribeiro for Evans collection.
