Reviewed – Navy Lace Dress from Lavitta

I love discovering new places to shop and find clothes that are designed with ‘women’ in mind. By this I mean clothes that look great on the hanger, but also have an appeal that is both stylish and practical. Dresses of decent length, with sleeves, in stretchy fabrics that move when you do, and in a range of colours that are not limited to black, black and more black. Lavitta is just one such label.

Lavitta is ‘an exclusive online shop where fashion fits and flatters, and style and quality go hand in hand.’ Coming in a range of sizes that ranges from 12-24, it covers all aspects of fashion, from good quality everyday pieces, to outfits that are perfect for weddings and other formal occasions. I was recently contacted by Lavitta to see if I would be interested in reviewing some items from the current collection, and I was super impressed by the range and choice.

The first dress I am reviewing has a definite touch of Kate Middleton influence to it. The Navy Lace Side Gathered Dress is a contrast lace design, with a light blue lace covering a navy underlayer. It is a pull-on design with a side ruching that is great for drawing attention away from the stomach area, and the fabric is stretchy, with the underlayer being in 100% polyester.

I really like the style, fit and comfort of this dress, which is frankly very easy to wear. The quality feels good and the colour is lovely, really deep and elegant looking – a great alternative to the little black dress. I liked that the sleeves covered the shoulder and upper arm, but that the cuffs weren’t tight or restrictive. The length was also good for me, I’m 5ft 7 and this was a knee length fit.DSCN0720This dress is a great transitional piece. I wore it for a night at the Ballet last week and it was a truly freezing night, so opaque tights were most definitely required, but I feel you can truly get away with it. But in contrast, I think this would also work with a strappy sandal as the weather gets warmer, or a navy patent stiletto heel without tights.

The side gather dress costs £40 and I think this is great value for a dress you can wear all seasons and for so many different occasions.

Kate Middleton – Latest Outfits

It’s been a busy week for Duchess Kate. The state visit of the Chinese President has seen Kate attend her first state banquet, and she has also met Jackie Chan and attended multiple occasions in Scotland. For lovers of Kate’s style, it has been a real fashion bonanza, because she has, quite frankly, looked amazing for every occasion, with the Dolce and Gabbana Marsala dress being one of my favourite Kate looks ever.

Here are three outfits from this week in a bit more detail.

Look 1 – State Banquet.

Red is always a great colour for Kate, and the Jenny Packham dress was a beautiful, formal choice. This dress did remind me of the sort of styles Princess Diana opted for in the late 80s for some reason, and I did think that Kate played it just right for the occasion – with red being a perfect colour for China, and the dress being elegant and demure.

Red is a great choice for Christmas formal occasions and there are some stunning red looks around if you want to take inspiration from Kate for the upcoming party season.

Look 2 – Dolce and Gabbana Lace

This is one of my favourite Kate Middleton looks ever. Some have commented that it is a shame Kate didn’t opt for purely British designers during this week, but this marsala lace dress was a spectacular triumph for Kate, with the lace managing to be both classic and totally modern. It is just the epitome of chic, and totally what a 21st century princess should be choosing to wear.

With this shade being the colour of the season, and lace being a style staple, there are lots of ways to incorporate this sort of look into your wardrobe.

Look 3 – Christopher Kane in Scotland

Kate wore one of the brightest stars of British fashion for a series of appointments in Scotland (Dundee to be precise.) The Christopher Kane coat and dress is another sleek and stylish look that is perfect in its minimalism.

kate-now--zA blue coat is a great alternative to classic black, it adds a little bit of colour to the wardrobe but seems to be a colour that suits most hair colours and skin tones.

Wallis review – A little blue dress

When Wallis sent me the Ink Lace Ruche Side dress a couple of weeks ago, I never in a million years thought that this particular dress would become my ‘go-to’ frock, perfect for all manner of occasions, easy to wear, and versatile enough to team with a range of other colours, including metallics. This dress has already been worn for two special occasions. Forget the ‘Little black dress’ and meet instead the ‘little blue dress.’

This is a classic 60s shaped shift dress. The neckline is almost slash style – quite high, but with pleated detail, whilst there is also ruching on the side that adds another element to the dress. The lace hangs slightly lower than the stretch underlayer, and this has a back zip fastening, although, due to the stretch nature of the dress, I just put this over my head.

The dress is what I would call French Navy, not the dark navy that can often be mistaken for black, but a warmer, richer shade that is obviously blue. I have teamed this with pink, just because I love the two colours together, and also a silver grey which again works really well with blue.

I first wore this dress to a film premiere night at the Everyman Cinema. It was a chilly night, so I teamed it with a pink cardigan and Mary Janes for a 1960s style look. I added pearls, again for that Jackie Kennedy styling.

I’ve also worn the dress for a trip to the theatre. Again it was a rather chilly evening, so I added a Laura Ashley cropped cardigan (£1.99 from a charity shop – bargain!) and a pair of heeled shoe boots from Spartoo to try to ward off the early spring chill.

This dress is now quite low stock due to the current sales price, but it also comes in a great, zesty orange colour that would be lovely against a summer suntan.
