August Outfit Post

It has to be said that I love August. Getting to have some quality time with my little boy is always a pleasure, plus it is also the month of my wedding anniversary, and we spend at least one week in Wales enjoying Summer. So whilst, in weather terms, it was far from a scorcher, there were still lots of opportunities to have a lot of family fun, and, with a few events thrown into the mix, it is a month that I’m already missing, especially as Autumn has arrived with cold, winds and lots of rain.

In terms of fashion, there were a few new additions to my wardrobe, but generally I have been hitting the charity shops with a vengeance. I had an extensive wardrobe clearout in August and donated around eight sacks of clothing and shoes to a local charity shop, but this has only made space for some more pieces, which is always a dangerous thing to do. That said, a positive of my cull was that I found lots of things that I’d completely forgotten about, which is a little like buying something new.

Two charity shop bargains were the black vintage M&S dress and the dotted dress. The black dress was a vintage St Michael label and still has the original tags on. I wore it twice last month, so for £4.99, it has already paid for itself. The dotted dress was a catalogue label, also still with tags, probably from the 1980s, but with a real fresh modern feel.

What sort of style did you opt for in August?

Gudrun Sjoden Belem Dress

I will never stop being a fan of the wonderful Gudrun Sjoden. Whilst the rest of the High Street is embracing minimalism and neutrals, Gudrun takes one look and says ‘no, not for me’ and instead treats us to a riot of pattern and colour, in high quality organic cottons that allow us to stretch, move and breathe. A fashion maverick in the vein of Westwood, Betsey Johnson and Pam Hogg, Gudrun’s slice of Scandinavian style is one to love and embrace.

I’ve been a fan of Gudrun since I discovered the brand at a Varg press day a fair few years ago, and each season I add a few new pieces to my wardrobe. My latest piece is the stunning Belem dress, a dress that, on first appearance, may seem a gorgeous casual piece for daytime, due to the loose fitting style, the use of tencel/elastane to give it a soft and stretchy feel, and the addition of…wait for it…POCKETS on the dress. But despite it being the perfect day dress, I put an evening spin on it for a night at the theatre, to show that Gudrun’s pieces can be as glamorous as they are functional and practical.

Gudrun Sjoden say of the dress:-

Our “Belem” print comes into its own in this dress with its slightly looser-fitting style, short sleeves and practical side pockets. Works just as well with leggings as with pants.

But I felt with the addition of heels, and a belt to create a shape to the dress, it could well be adapted into something perfect for the evening. Plus there was that stunning green shade that is both rich and eye catching, making it perfect when teamed with classic black accessories.

Taking my Gudrun Belem dress for a night out

The dress is so easy to wear, stretchy enough to allow for a food baby if you are going to over indulge, and yet classy enough to elicit lots of comments and praise. Add in that it washes like a dream and you have the perfect go-to dress for night or day. Do you want this in your wardrobe – it’s a no brainer really.

An End Of Sale Bargain Dress From Lovedrobe

As one season ends, you can really find some exceptional sales bargains, particularly when Summer hasn’t been as good as we would’ve wanted. Sales can be a minefield for those who impulse buy, you can end up buying a lot of fashion trends that you then don’t wear, but for savvy shoppers you can get pieces that can work transitionally into the next season, or are worth keeping for your next holiday or for next Summer.

A case in point is Lovedrobe, who have some amazing sales bargains at the moment. One such bargain is the Lovedrobe GB Black Poppy Print Cold Shoulder Maxi Dress, which comes in sizes 14-30 and is now half price at just £19. A beautiful Spanish style dress with more than a touch of flamenco about it, this is a stunning gown with a Bardot style off the shoulder look but with shoulder straps too,

The print of this dress is classic and would definitely work as a transitional piece, it is actually quite a dark choice for Summer and is much more suited to Autumn, where it could be worn layered over a polo neck or a long sleeved t-shirt for a bohemian look. The fact that it is fully lined also makes it warmer than you might think.

There are a few things you need to be aware of with this dress. The first is that the style is soft and flowing which means you could size down. I chose a size 16, but a 14 would definitely have been a better fit for me, so I decided to add a belt and that felt much more my style. The second is that the dress is long. I’m 5ft 7 and without a shoe with a heel, this touched the floor. I added a pair of 1940s style red wedges which worked perfect, so unless you are very tall, you will need to add some height in order to keep the dress off the floor.

Lovedrobe has some amazing sales bargains that are well worth a look at the moment, you can find all sales buys here.
