We all know why health is important. Most of us take it for granted when we are in the pink of it. But what happens as you grow older? The rate at which you age doesn’t depend on only your genes but also your lifestyle. A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2009 states that you can minimize the risk of coronary disease by maintaining a healthy lifestyle every day which includes

  • being active for at least 30 minutes
  • eating 5 helpings of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • avoiding cigarettes and excess alcohol

The study is an indication of the fact that we lack discipline and the will power to uphold our endeavor of moving toward better health. The leading cause of deaths in the US is coronary disease.

Having stated the hard facts, we’d like to say that it’s never too late to change and you can make a difference in your life even if you start a strict fitness regime today.

  1.      Don’t take up retirement.

By early retirement we mean, don’t stop doing something for yourself even when you’re out of work. Work keeps us busy and our minds fresh. An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. Don’t give way to your mind to play tricks on you. Take up a hobby when you’re young. Enjoy what you do. Staying happy and busy activates the happy hormones in your body which, in turn, improves metabolism and energy levels.

  1.      Floss every day

Flossing every day seems very tedious. What most of us don’t know is that flossing prevents germs and infections from entering the bloodstream. When food particles get stuck in the teeth, they rot over time if not cleaned. If you have abrasions in your mouth or even minor cuts, infections can make their way into the bloodstream. Your heart will have to work harder to get rid of these infections. These infections may even damage organs in severe cases. Take care of oral hygiene every day! Brush your teeth twice a day and rinse your mouth after every meal.

  1.      Move more

The effects of exercise aren’t lost on those who exercise every day. “Exercise is the only real fountain of youth that exists”, says Jay Olshansky, a professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Exercise oils your body and gets it functioning more. Even 30 minutes of vigorous exercise a day will keep your body well oiled. It improves your mood and mental acuity. If you find yourself in a sedentary life, make it a point to walk more and take short breaks every few hours to take a walk for five minutes. The idea is to keep moving to keep all your muscles working and bones strong.

  1.      Eat a fiber-rich breakfast

A fiber-rich diet is beneficial to detoxify your body. But you already know this. Eating a fiber-rich diet has even better effects. Fiber takes time to digest. It cleanses your body from the inside and makes digestion smooth. Now if you have a lot of fiber in the morning, everything you eat in the day gets digested better. Since the body works more in the day than the night, it digests food better with the help of all the fiber. It also expels any potential infections and parasites better. If you feel off despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle, there’s a possibility that you may be infected by parasites. You can find more information on about parasites. The article covers the basics of parasite infection.

  1.      Get at least 6 hours of sleep a day

Do you often find yourself giving up on sleep so you have more hours in the day? If the answer is yes then there is a possibility that you’re reducing hours from your lifespan. The body needs at least 6 hours of sleep to rejuvenate and heal. Research has shown that people who sleep better and at least 6 hours a day have longer lifespans than those who don’t. When the body has the time to make its daily repairs on the body, it increases longevity. The human body isn’t very different from machines. Make the repairs and do regular maintenance to keep it functioning better and longer.

The human body is a wonderful machine and better than regular machines because it can repair itself. Over time, it needs a little aid. To keep it young and longlasting, just a little self-discipline can go a long way. Make a commitment to your body today and see how it serves you better.
