6 Tips For Keeping Your Car Clean As A Pet Parent

If you’re a pet parent, you know what it’s like to absolutely adore your pet and want to bring them everywhere you go.

Unfortunately, alongside every loveable pet, there comes along a lot of not-so-loveable shedding, drooling and dirt.

If you’ve ever climbed into your car with your pet, you may be familiar with the challenge of trying to keep your car clean throughout and after every ride. For every pet owner, balancing taking care of their car parts as well as their pet is one of the trickiest challenges.

Fortunately, to maintain cleanliness, you don’t need to completely stop taking your pets on car rides. Instead, there are a few simple tips that you can implement to ensure your car stays spick and span.

In this article, we will examine six important tips you can use to keep your car clean as a pet parent.

Let’s begin!

1) Cover Your Seats

Dogs and cats have very sharp nails. While unintentional, these sharp claws can easily scratch leather or put a hole into your vehicle’s cloth upholstery.

To prevent your car seats from taking too much damage, you can protect them with covers. These covers come in a variety of designs, colours and materials to choose from. Moreover, with pet-friendly seat covers, there are several textural options available like a sheet and padded options to make travel more comfortable for your furry companions.

Furthermore, as an added precaution, you could also trim your pet’s nails with a pair of cat or dog clippers before taking them on a ride.

2) Get Rid of Hair

As pet parents, we all love to see our pets frolicking and having a good time. However, the pet drool and leftover fur that follows might not be as delightful.

Pets often shed and their fur is just one of the marks they leave behind after riding in your car. Unfortunately, pet fur can become a real nuisance and ruin the look of your car interior. In particular, for someone who is allergic to fur, any stray pieces of fur may become a real hazard.

Keep a lint roller inside your car to quickly clean up any fur left behind on your seats. Investing in some nice seat covers can also prove helpful in preventing hair from sticking to your car seats. If bits of fur get trapped in the carpet of your car, give it a thorough vacuuming or use a fine-grain pumice stone to work them free.

3) Clean the Windows

When your pet gets excited on a car ride, they may put their paws or noses up against the window to get a better view of the outside. At times, this can lead to muddy streaks on the interior of your car windows alongside some cute but inconvenient nose prints.

That’s why when cleaning your car after a journey with your pet, don’t forget to wipe the windows down with some wet wipes. For a more thorough cleaning, you may also want to vacuum up any mud or dirt that’s tracked in on your pet’s paws.

4) Clear the Air

Do you like the scent of a clean car? Of course, after all, who doesn’t? When you’re cleaning up after a ride with your pet, don’t forget to de-odour your car as well.

Animals often give off certain strong odours, so even a short car ride may lead to a stinky car. To combat this issue, spritz a fabric freshener on all your car upholstery before taking another sniff to see if the smell is gone.

If the smell persists, sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet and let it sit for around 24 hours. Lastly, finish off your cleaning by vacuuming up the baking soda. This will help you eliminate any strong smells.

You may also want to consider using an air freshener in your car to keep it smelling sweet.

5) Create a Free-Movement Zone

If your pet has a container or pet carrier they’re used to travelling in, we recommend using that for car journeys. These carriers ensure that your pet doesn’t fall or hurt themselves whenever your car swerves or brakes.

Moreover, it can also help you reduce the amount of fur-fall on your car seats without compromising on their comfort. This makes post-travel cleaning much easier.

Alternatively, you could also try cordoning off the driver’s seat area using pillows or a bedsheet. This allows your pet to have ample room to move around the back of your car without disturbing you while you’re driving.

6) Carry Emergency Supplies

If you want to avoid cleaning a large mess at home or driving around with a stinky car, you need to ensure your car always has emergency cleaning supplies.

At times, your pet may get carsick or struggle to control their bladder on long trips. Having some trusty paper towels, cleaning cloths, plastic bags and a mini vacuum cleaner may come in handy during these times.

To Wrap Up

Keeping your car clean as a pet parent doesn’t have to be difficult.

By taking the right precautions and keeping the necessary tools and cleaning supplies on hand, you will be primed and ready for any messes. Every pet owner loves their pet and if you don’t want them to miss out on fun adventures with you, make sure you go the extra mile to keep your car nice and tidy after.

With these helpful tips, we are confident that you will be able to tackle any pet cleaning emergency whenever it arrives.
