8 Most Popular Card Games For Adults

Card games are the most popular games to be played indoors, but it’s difficult to say exactly when and where card games first originated.

There are records of playing cards being used in China as early as the ninth century, and they were introduced to Europe during the fourteenth century.

By the 1500s, card games were a firmly established part of the culture in both East and West. The earliest known card game was called “Madiao,” played with 32 domino-like cards. The Chinese nobility enjoyed playing this game, eventually spreading to other Asian countries.

Games To Play With Cards

Today we have multiple games to play with cards, and it can be hard to decide which one is right for you.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of the 8 best card games to play, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a total beginner.

1. Uno

One of the most well-known card games out there, Uno, is perfect for family game nights. Players take turns matching the color or the number on the card in their hand with the one on top of the draw pile.

The first player to match all their cards is the winner.

2. Spoons

A fast-paced and fun game that’s perfect for larger groups, Spoons is all about being the first player to collect 4 of a kind.

Players pass around cards as quickly as possible until someone gets 4 of the same rank, at which point they grab a spoon from the center of the table. The last player left without a spoon loses!

3. War

In a simple yet addictive card game, each player lays down a card, and whoever has the highest card takes both piles.

In case of a tie, each player lays down 3 more cards, and whoever has the highest card takes all 9! The game is won by the first player whose deck is empty.

4. Solitaire

A classic single-player card game that anyone can pick up and play, Solitaire is perfect for when you need some alone time.

The goal is to move all of the cards into 4 foundation piles, sorted by suit and in ascending order. You’ll be able to do it quickly with practice.

5. I Doubt It

A hilarious bluffing game that’s perfect for larger groups, “I Doubt It” will have you laughing out loud in no time.

Players take turns trying to get rid of their cards by playing them face down and making statements about what they’ve played (“I doubt it”). If another player calls their bluff, they must take back all their cards and start again!

6. Hearts

A trick-taking card game perfect for those who want something more challenging, Hearts is all about strategy and planning.

Players try to avoid taking tricks with Hearts and the Queen of Spades since these will deduct points from their scorecard. Whoever scores 100 points first wins!

7. Skip-Bo

A fun and fast-paced card game perfect for those who love numbers, Skip-Bo is all about getting rid of your cards as quickly as possible.

Players take turns playing number cards in order from 1-12 onto 4 shared building piles. Once a pile reaches 12, it “skips” over to 13 and so on until someone has played their entire deck!

8. Crazy Eights

Another classic card game that’s great for adults, Crazy Eights, is similar to Uno, except with an added twist – eights are wild! This means players can change the color or number on top of the discard pile by playing an eight instead.

Be careful, though – if you don’t have an eight when someone else does, you’ll have to take 2 penalty cards! The first player to run out of cards wins.
