A Simple Guide to Keep Your Bathroom Spotlessly Clean

As one of the most frequently used facilities in the home, your bathroom will, no doubt, get messy quickly. Every day you take a bath and use the bathroom’s amenities means there will be new dirt, soap and shampoo suds, hair, and stuff to clean. After a week or two without cleaning, the mess will accumulate and cause a bigger headache for you.

Let this simple guide help you in keeping your bathroom spotlessly clean.

Start with a Checklist

Work, social life, and other matters can get in the way of doing chores, but home maintenance isn’t something that you can do away with altogether. That’s why keeping a chore list (checklist for chores) is vital in order not to neglect your home, especially your bathroom.

List the tasks that you usually do when you clean your bathroom, and classify them according to how often they need to be done—daily, weekly, or monthly. The most urgent and least time-consuming tasks can be penciled in to your daily routine.

For instance, you can take out the trash every day after you get home from work. You can run a squeegee over the glass shower door or mirror to remove excess moisture and prevent watermarks. Other tasks that need more time, like cleaning the toilet and tub, scrubbing the floor, and decluttering cabinets, should be left for the weekend or on your day off.

Prepare Products and Tools Beforehand

It can be a hassle going to and from the supply closet if you don’t have all your stuff ready by the time you clean. To save yourself time, prepare a portable caddy of the usual cleaning tools and products you use. This caddy should include the essentials for bathroom cleaning:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Scrub brush
  • Sponges
  • Microfiber towels
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Disinfectant spray
  • Deodorizer spray

You can add in more products or tools according to your needs, but make sure to use nontoxic cleaning products that won’t harm your health, your pets, your property, and the environment. Stay away from cleaners and sprays with containing hazardous chemicals and ingredients.

Declutter Cabinets and Drawers

The clutter in your bathroom can be hiding in your cabinets and drawers, so make it a habit to clear out organizers weekly or monthly. Check every product for their expiration dates, and throw away those you can’t use anymore. Likewise, clear out all the empty containers.

If you have a medicine cabinet in your bathroom, remember to look through there too. Check for expired medication or supplements, and then throw them out. Don’t forget to restock your medicine cabinet so you’re always prepared for an emergency.

Create an organization system for your cabinets and drawers, and use organizers, like dividers, racks, and tension rods, to maximize space and arrange everything properly.

Air Out the Bathroom

Moisture is one of the biggest banes of every homeowner. It can cause mold, rot wooden furniture, damage appliances, and leave near-permanent water stains. If you don’t want moisture to remain in your bathroom, always ventilate the room during and after use.

Turning on the exhaust fan removes humidity and hot air (a fatal combination for the continued good health of your home) in the room and helps it dry faster. Plus, it also aids in eliminating bad odor.

If possible, open the windows in your bathroom from time to time, but not when it’s hotter outside than it is inside. This keeps the house cool and prevents more heat and humidity from getting indoors. Let some sunshine in too to help sanitize the bathroom.

Prevent Plumbing Problems

Plumbing problems can result in a bigger mess for you to clean. If you want to avoid that future headache, you may as well do something to prevent these problems. One common plumbing problem at home is a leaking pipe or faucet. You can prevent this from happening by covering your pipes with foam insulation.

Toilet clogs are also pretty usual in bathrooms. That’s why you should consider replacing your old water closet with a macerating upflush toilet, which has a high-efficiency motor pump that breaks down wastewater and uses powerful pressure to facilitate better drainage.

Falling hair, soap suds, and debris can also block and clog shower and sink drains. One way to avoid those problems is to use a drain cover that will keep these things from clogging your drain.

Keeping Your Bathroom Spotlessly Clean

Maintaining the cleanliness and order in your bathroom is not an impossible task. It requires time and effort, yes, but you can do it if you keep a checklist and follow a routine cleaning schedule. Knowing what areas to address and preventing future messes will help a lot too.

A clean and clutter-free bathroom isn’t necessary only for aesthetic purposes but also for your physical, mental, and emotional health. You deserve to live in a pleasant and orderly home.

My biggest pet peeve is an unclean bathroom! I spot clean the bathroom as needed, and deep clean it every weekend. I also have professional tile cleaners come and scrub the tile, as otherwise mold grows. All in all, it doesn’t take a lot of time and effort to keep your bathroom clean, but if you neglect it it will get much dirtier and harder to clean!
