Bardolino Opens in Birmingham

This week saw the opening of Bardolino, the latest in the line of restaurants that mark the takeover of the city by Marco Pierre White. Bardolino is located in the iconic Cube building at the back of The Mailbox, and has a gorgeous location canalside. This is the least formal, most relaxed of Marco’s City Centre offerings, with a real emphasis on Italian food, namely pizzas, pasta and Bellinis. I went along to a special brunch preview on Tuesday, and have to say I loved the location and relaxed, leisurely atmosphere, and this, combined with the delicious food, mean I will definitely be making a return visit very soon.

Bardolino is bright and inviting, with the decor a good mixture of modern a rustic. I was particularly enamoured with the crockery and the glasses used to serve the coffee, the sort of items you would just love to sneak into your bag (ahem!). There was live entertainment which added to the relaxed, but grown up ambiance of the place, and, even on a rather wet and miserable day, it was lovely to have the large double doors that overlook canalside open.

I must admit I am not really a breakfast person, but a rather large Bellini menu could not be ignored. I went for the Rossini – a strawberry Bellini, which is just a delicious choice. For food, I avoided the traditional style breakfasts and the sourdough choices and went for a toasted bagel, tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil. The tomatoes were sun dried and were beautifully teamed with the thick and creamy mozzarella, and the lightly toasted bagel was fresh and crunchy, making this a lovely blend of flavours.

I also tried the tropical fruit salad – fresh pineapple, mango and watermelon, with a slice of zesty lime that you squeeze all over the fruit. I loved the freshness of the fruit, and the lime added a welcome touch of tang to the dish.

With brunch, you must have some caffeine fix, and I opted for my favourite Caramel Latte, but this was presented with a mark point of different. The creamy latte came with a small glass bowl full of caramel syrup, the idea being that you could add this to your own taste. Being a caramel addict, I tipped the lot in, but I think this is a great idea, and the presentation looks so modern and stylish.

Bardolino is a welcome addition to the already impressive food scene in Birmingham, and with a new conference and events space soon to open, it is sure to be a huge success.
