It is now officially October, and so I think I am now safe to mention the word Christmas. I know that some people totally ban the word until Bonfire Night has come and gone, but for others, now is the time to start planning and preparing. This includes people who get paid monthly and may only have to paydays before the man in red arrives, those with lots to buy for, or even those like me, who have a child with a birthday the week before Christmas and so it is a very expensive time.
If you are making that list and checking it twice, the annual Festive Gift Fair that takes place at the Birmingham NEC on the 14-17 November, is a great one stop destination for all things Christmas. Now in its 24th year, the fair is one of the most popular Christmas Shopping events in the UK. with more than 325 stores that cater to all tastes and needs. There are special fair discounts on the day to make your money stretch just that little bit further, there is also a present creche where you can drop off your bags as you continue to shop.
The Fair is also about food and entertainment. The organisers say
The festive atmosphere is always fantastic and there’s even more this year with NEW icicle lighting throughout the hall and a NEW Victorian bandstand where LIVE Bands will take centre stage. While browsing the stalls, let the music get you into that Christmassy mood and be entertained by Santa himself, the UK’s Largest Snowman and Pantomime characters.
There are also a wide range of food stores selling all manner of festive fair to totally treat the tastebuds, as well as Champagne and festive fizz.

Festive Gift Fair Competition
Smashers from Zuru are the latest toy/collectable taking the kids world by storm. A plastic ball that you have to physically ‘smash’ to get to the sports-themed collectable character inside, Smashers come in all shapes and sizes, and have limited editions that are highly covetable. There are hundreds to collect, and appeal to children who usually enjoy collecting Topps cards. These are the new pocket money toy, and I have to say my lad Joe is obsessed.
Smashers come in a red plastic ball that you smash on the floor to get to the toy inside. This is, of course, great fun for kids. The “shattered” ball then doubles up as a bit of a puzzle as kids can try to put it back into a sphere. Once you get your figure you can use the Smashers information leaflet to discover who you have. Smashers are sorted into categories ranging from ‘Super Rare’ and ‘Limited Edition’ to Bad Sports and Ball Stars. The information sheet also doubles as a game space where you can throw your Smasher at another figure to try to earn points.
Smashers are loved by kids icons like the Tekkerz Kid and It’s Romello, and for serious collectors the red collectors bus which converts to a ball park and play area, as well as providing storage for your Smashers is an absolute must. My lad Joe is football mad, the UK version rather than American football, but he absolutely loves the idea of Smashers and is now collecting them, using rewards for good behaviour, work and goals to collect towards buying another set of figures.
You can find Smashers at a range of stockists including Argos, Smyths and Tesco.
Win With Smashers
If you would like to win a Smashers 8pk set worth £9.99 and a Smashers football tin worth £7.99 please enter the competition below.
In recent years a new day has rivaled Bonfire Night and Thanksgiving as the most popular and famous day in November. I am of course talking about Black Friday, the date when stores and the internet are a treasure trove of bargains and savings on literally everything that come just in time for Christmas. If you are trying to bag a bargain, or have your eye on something specific, then Black Friday, and it’s friend Cyber Monday, are dates to highlight in your diary.
This year’s Black Friday date is 24th November, but motoring giant Halfords are giving you some extra special treats in the run up to Black Friday with their Black Friday countdown deals that have stunning discounts and offers on them. The deals are added to daily, so it is a good idea to bookmark the page if you already have your eye on something on the site. There are currently great savings to be made on bikes, both adults and children’s, tools, and, fittingly for the time of year, toys.
Every little helps at this time of the year, and the savings you can make at the moment are pretty substantial, with some items now better than half price. New items will be released in the run up to Black Friday, and these items can be ordered now, you don”t have to wait until the 24th, meaning you can have them home and wrapped before the rush on Black Friday, and certainly well in time for December 25th.
Halfords are this year also hosting an incredible competition to tie in with Black Friday. The prizes are pretty amazing:-
- £2,000 worth of goodies, including a seven night holiday with Eurocamp (worth £1,000) and £1,000 worth of Black Friday deals.
- £800 worth of Black Friday goodies.
- £300 worth of Black Friday goodies.
