Christmas comes to MPW in The Cube

Christmas came a little early to Birmingham’s iconic Cube building, when Marco Pierre White’s popular restaurant hosted a ‘White Christmas’ tasting event, treating bloggers and food writers to a glamorous evening of Champagne, turkey and crackers, as well as what must be the most breathtaking view in Birmingham.

The restaurant is getting ready to launch its festive set menu, which will be available to parties of 10 or more people. In addition, this was an opportunity to showcase the private dining suite, which, with glass on three sides of the room, offers those exquisite views that MPW is quite rightly famous for.

We soon moved into the much quieter environs of the private dining suite which looked very festive, with a Christmas tree and a table decorated with mini parcels, snowflakes and crackers.

For my starter I had chosen Marco’s Winter Prawn Cocktail Salad. If I’m being honest, I don’t know what made it a specifically Winter Prawn cocktail, but it was certainly delicious, with lots of very fresh tasting prawns and a flavoursome seafood sauce. This was a substantial starter and I loved how it was served in a cocktail glass for that ultimate retro styled treat.

There were some lovely choices for the main course, including Sea Bass and Rib-eye Steak, but as this was a Christmas meal I felt I had to opt for the traditional turkey. I was so pleased that I did. The turkey was stuffed with Marco’s homemade stuffing, which was very tasty, with a herb/meat flavour that perfectly complimented the turkey. The turkey itself was very succulent, it can be a dry meat, but this was certainly not the case here, helped immensely by the Pancetta it had been wrapped in. There were also other, delicious elements to this meal – the gorgeous goose fat roasties and cubed potatoes, the pigs in blankets that were wrapped in delectable salty bacon that was just so crispy. The only element I didn’t eat was the Cranberry sauce – this was merely a personal choice as I am not a fan of Cranberry other than in Vodka!

Of course, Christmas dining is all about indulgence, so I was more than happy to choose a very rich, chocolate option when it came to dessert. The Double chocolate cheesecake with mini marshmallows was exquisite – it looked divine and tasted as good as it looked, with rich chocolate and a biscuit base. Basically heaven in the form of a cheesecake.

The festive menu at MPW in The Cube is simply lovely, and at £40 per head for three courses, I think this is a great option for a work Christmas meal, or a family celebration.
