Creating a dream living room

It often seems that when it comes to creating dream spaces in our homes, we concentrate on certain rooms, and then neglect others. I am certainly guilty of this. I often think what my perfect bedroom/boudoir would be like, or dream of a kitchen perfect for a Michelin star chef, and yet, when it comes to a living room, I feel distinctly uninspired.

Yet this certainly shouldn’t be the case. The living room is probably the room in the house where we spend the most time. It is the place we relax in, spend our evenings watching television, cuddle up to the hubby on the sofa for movie night, or enjoy a good book and a cuppa on a stormy day. It should reflect our needs, our tastes and our personalities, and yet it can often feel bland and unloved. This shouldn’t be the case, as modern living room furniture can be anything from vintage inspired to avant garde. So, in honour of the room that has the most time spent in it, but often the least amount of love cherished on it, I have created my dream living room, a real loved space.

I think every living room should have a focal point, for me this would be a seriously stylish sofa. I love the Vintage styling of the Sofa below, which would suit a room of any size. The legs are just such a lovely touch, they make this a really grown up sofa, definitely perfect for creating a haven.

Once you’ve chose your focal point for the room, you can then choose furniture and accessories to compliment this. I believe certain things are crucial to create a lovely living space – a pretty mirror, a bookshelf, pictures, photographs and candles. These mix personal touches with practical elements, which should help to create that perfect space for you and your family. But you also need to look at the fixtures and fittings of your living room. Skirting boards and architrive are features that help to set the tone of your room and show whether you are going for a modern or period look. You are also no longer restricted to just white when choosing things like skirting board, natural wood and neutral colours are also popular choices.

What things would you choose to make your perfect living room? Do you have a preferred colour scheme?
