Fan Day Friday – Earning Your Stripes

When it comes to fashion, and especially Summer fashion, there is a style that consistently pops up in my wardrobe as the epitome of my style, and that is stripes. I love a stripe, I ignore all the perceived wisdom about who can wear stripes, and what sort of stripes you should wear depending on your body shape, and I just embrace the stripe for all it is worth.

A stripe is an enigma. It is a bit of fun (think candy stripes) that can also look super classic and stylish (pinstripe anyone). It can be described as nautical in navy and white, or French inspired – what is more iconic than a Breton stripe? It can come in literally any combination, from Chanel style monochrome to colour clashes, and frankly looks fabulous either way. I posted a picture wearing a much loved Jaeger dress in the sunshine on Monday and had so many comments saying the same thing ‘you can’t be stripes for Summer.’.

Most of my celebrity style icons have had a style moment wearing stripes. Alexa Chung wears stripes with panache, keeping it simplistic with shorts or jeans for a carefree summer look.  Clemence Poesy works stripes into a red carpet look by adding a feathered skirt.  Margot Robbie shows how beautiful stripes can look on the red carpet in a glamorous, monochrome evening gown, whilst Kate Bosworth and Emma Stone use stripes as part of a more tailored look. Laura Bailey mismatches prints and textures into a stylish look with a striped jumper at it’s heart.

Stripes are everywhere in stores this summer, and I have selected five of my favourite key pieces if you want to add a stripe to your summer wardrobe. Remember, they also make a great transitional piece so will still work when Autumn comes around.
