Father’s Day Gift Ideas: Katto Knives

As we edge towards June, we move towards the most difficult gifting day of the year. I am of course talking about Father’s Day, the day that is always a minefield as dad, once again, tells us that he doesn’t really want anything, and not to make a fuss. So, over the next week or so I am going to post some ideas on the blog for gifts that your dad might like and appreciate, and, in this case, might actually use.

Katto is a London based company who create the most exquisite kitchen knives around. The knives are actually handmade in South London and combine Japanese steel blades with hand carved, sustainable wooden handles. The knives look absolutely wonderful, and will last for years if looked after properly. They are the perfect gift for a dad who fancies himself as a bit of a Gordon Ramsey whenever he hits the kitchen and is sure to raise a smile for any father whose favourite room is the kitchen.

A gift from Katto appeals on so many levels. It is a way to support a small, independent business who are creating something very special, an item that, because it is handmade, is totally unique. Being handmade, and handmade in the UK in particular, means that the item has been created with love and care, and a high level of craftmanship. The small and also young business aspect of Katto (the business was only founded in 2018) mean that the small details that make this a special, unique gift have really been thought about. This is shown in all the little extras that come with your knife, which arrives stylishly gift boxed. There is a care leaflet for your knife which shows how easy it it to care for it (basically wash by hand, keep it away from that dreaded dishwasher and you will be fine.) There is the lucky penny and the story of the tradition of giving a knife being seen as bad luck, so how a shiny penny was given to counteract this. There is also an eco tote bag which is a really lovely touch too.

If you are still unsure about what knife to gift, then opt for a chefs knife. This is an all purpose knife that will really earn its keep in the kitchen. I chose the Nala handle, which is beech, but you could choose from three handle styles, the  Henry (walnut), Nala (beech) and Olivia (rosewood) in order to match your other kitchen utensils. You can also choose to have the handle monogrammed to create an evil more incredible, unique gift.
