Half term holiday ideas

After waiting what has seemed like an eternity for a holiday, Easter will soon be upon us. What is more, it will be quickly followed by Mayday and then the Whitsun break. Yes, holiday season is here, so now might be the perfect time for thinking about a short break, or a longer vacation. With schools now taking a dim view on parent’s who take their children out of school, holidays have become an even more expensive luxury for those who decide to play by the rules. But there are hotels you can find in last minute deals that offer real bargains, and there are also other ways of keeping the cost down.

London Break

A break in London might sound expensive, but there are lots of things you can do in the city that cost absolutely nothing. Hotels like the Royal National in Bloomsbury have larger, family sized rooms which can help to keep the cost down – you pay for the room, not per person.

The great thing about London are the free museums and galleries. The Natural History Museum, The Science Museum, The British Museum and the V&A are all brilliant days out that cost nothing. Many have areas to eat in. so you can take your own lunch and make further savings.

Similarly, if the day is warm, there can be nothing better than a day in one of London’s many parks. Take a football, frisbee, bats and balls, add a picnic to the mix, and a great day is assured.

Beside the seaside

All kids love the seaside, and many seaside towns now have reasonably priced hotel chains like Comfort Inn and Travel Lodges for keeping the budget low. I spent a few days in Barry last Summer with my husband and little boy, and we kept the budget low by making the most of the sunshine. We ate fish and chips on the beach, took walks in the lovely weather, and got a bucket and spade and spent hours making sandcastles and paddling in the waves.

A romantic getaway

Of course, the school holidays also mean not having to worry about the school run, and this may be a great opportunity for a romantic break without kids if you have understanding grandparents. There are some great offers around for one night stays in top hotels, so blow the budget and have a night to remember, because, let’s face it, everyone deserves a break.
