How To Raise A Team Player

A team player is someone who is focussed on working towards a common goal, without being led by personal interests. They are someone who isn’t afraid to express their own opinions and ideas but does so whilst also supporting their peers. Being a good team player is a valuable skill for children to learn from a young age, so you may be wondering what you can do to help. I have teamed up with an independent school in Manchester to share some advice on how you can raise a team player.

Help Them with their Social Skills

Teamwork relies on good communication, so it’s important that your child is comfortable in social situations and in talking to people in a clear, coherent manner. With that said, it would be wise to support your child with their social skills and help them understand body language and facial expressions. This is something that you can work on over time.

Encourage Independent Problem Solving

If your child learns to rely on you every time they have a problem, they won’t be able to overcome obstacles independently. So, try and encourage them to come up with solutions on their own rather than jumping in to save the day at the slightest sign of trouble. They won’t be great at it at first, but practise makes perfect. Being able to solve problems independently will help them feel more confident to suggest solutions when they are working as part of a team.

Promote Flexibility

A good team player is someone who is able to deal with change, even at short notice. With this in mind, try and help your child learn how to be flexible depending on different circumstances. Tweak their routine from time to time so that they are familiar with change rather than afraid of it.

These are just a few suggestions to get you started. You will also need to teach your child to be a compassionate, helpful individual who listens to and respects others.

Sharing is caring!
