Know your jeans — how to choose the style that’s best for you

Summer is definitely here, and the trends of 2018 are getting nicely settled in our wardrobes. But whatever trends you decide to wear, it is safe to say that there will be a smattering of denim there. We all love denim in our closets, it’s comfortable, easy-to-style and can be dressed up or down. But ultimately, when it comes to washes, shapes and styles, we all have our preferences.

Deciding the shape

Spring/Summer 2018 is all about the straight leg. They’re the most popular silhouette this season and are a wearable style that is perfect for summer, especially if you choose a bright white wash. High-rise, straight-leg cropped jeans are also a popular choice according to Instagram feeds. These are great for creating a waist if you struggle in this area, and give a  slimming silhouette from waist to ankle.

But what other styles are out there?

Pear-shaped

If you have a pear-shaped body, you carry weight in the lower areas of your body. Bootcut jeans are often the style of choice as they balance out the hip area with a lovely kickflare shape. High waists work well too as they skim this area.

Apple-shaped

Those who are apple-shaped are more likely to carry weight around their middle.Choose a straight leg jean as this pulls the attention away from the stomach and towards the legs.

Petite

If you’re petite, jeans can be a nightmare, especially in terms of length. You can create an illusion of height by opting for a high-waisted design which can help you to look taller.  Low-rise jeans are also a good fit. Look out for brands that carry proper petite sizing for the best fit and look,

Tall

For those of you who are tall, it is fairly easy to make any jeans look good. Low-rise with a straight or skinny leg will achieve a statuesque line, or if you want your pins to look even longer, go for a high-waisted cut.

Which washes are on-trend?

Summer is the time of year when we can really embrace jeans in those lighter colours, just ask Liz Hurley who is the queen of the white jeans. This season look for pretty pastel shades of yellow and pink taking direct inspiration from the catwalks. If pretty and pink is not your thing, try a boyish khaki green wash which is hard wearing and practical.

Classic blue is just that, always a classic, so keep it this season friendly with a slightly faded Californian shade, with a focus on frayed hems and ankle grazing lengths. If you want to take a more polished, work-appropriate approach, opt for crisp, clean washes.  1950s style stylish crops in Blossom pink and Cornflower blue are a real investment for the season. They will look great with those Bardot tops that are still around, and will work into Autumn with a Breton style t-shirt.

Names to look out for

Instead of heading straight to the high-street, consider some premium labels this season for long-lasting fashion. Think Citizens of Humanity, Frame and AG. You’ll probably have already realised that these jeans are worth the price point thanks to their impeccable tailoring and fabric technology like J Brand’s Photo Ready fabric – which is ultra-slimming and promises to contour to your shape. Denim can be a great investment as the cost per wear becomes minimal, especially if you love and live in your jeans.
