Lingerie Trends For 2023
No matter how beautiful your clothes are, the look can be totally ruined if you don’t have the right foundations. Visible panty lines, ill fitting bras, the wrong bra for your top, the list is endless when it comes to choosing the right underwear. We can also be guilty of holding on to pieces of lingerie that have long since passed their use by date – discoloured, ill fitting, and frankly uncomfortable. Something needs to change in the underwear department!
Autumn 2023 should be the season you make the change when it comes to your foundations. Cull that underwear drawer of everything that has, seen better days, no longer fits properly, was never really your style, and feels uncomfortable to wear. Also get rid of anything that you just don’t feel, or look good in – we don’t hold on to bad clothing, so why hold on to bad undies, even if we are the only people who see it? Once this is done, we can turn our attentions to adding some new undies that we actually like, and want to wear.
Belle Lingerie have been looking at some of the key lingerie trends for 2023, with a particular focus on finding under garments that not only look great, but actually suit your body shape. They say:-
There are five primary “shapes” commonly used to categorise women’s body types. The apple body type describes women with a fuller midsection, broader bust, and narrower hips, with weight gain primarily concentrated around the waist and abdomen. Pear shapes exhibit a smaller upper body and a more pronounced lower body. Hourglass shapes boast a well-proportioned upper and lower body, accentuated by a defined waistline. Rectangle body types feature minimal curves, where the shoulders, bust, waist, and hips align in width. Lastly, the inverted triangle types showcase broader shoulders and bust in comparison to their waist and hips, hence the term “inverted triangle”.
Underwear as Outerwear – a growing trend
One of the trends that they have focused on, that has been a big trend fashion wise is that of underwear as outerwear. We all know Madonna did this to amazing effect in the 1980’s, wearing bras and basques in place of tops, with layers of pearls and crucifixes to make a clear fashion statement, but in 2023, the look is far more sophisticated and elegant. The underwear as outerwear could be as simple as a bra peeping out from beneath a sharp tuxedo jacket, a jacket that is in itself being worn as a top, fully buttoned up, with no intention of it being removed.
Another way that underwear as outerwear works is for more casual daywear, particularly in the Summer. Sports type bra’s look great with gym shorts and more sporty looks, taking the place of a crop top, yet offering far more support. Sports labels give this a cool, edgy street look, and this has been much seen this past Summer, from Barmouth to Barbados.
Corsets are back
Corsets are the perfect way to both showcase, and create the illusion, of a hour glass figure. In the past, corsets have, of course been the most uncomfortable of foundation garments, but, these days, they are often stretchy and flexible, and thus not only do you look great in them, they are, in the form of a corset bodysuit, comfortable to wear all day long too, and work particularly well under dresses as they help you to avoid the visible panty lines that ruin so many perfect looks.
Corsets and basques are, of course, more lingerie items that can be worn as outerwear, I love the idea of wearing a vintage style corset over a classic white shirt to really subvert this smart item of attire.
