It’s 80 years since Coco Chanel decided that black should not just be confined to mourning and funerals and thus created one of the most iconic fashion items of all time – the Little Black dress. Since then, this item has become the stuff of legends, with more iconic, immortal reincarnations worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Princess Diana (that famous dress which stole the thunder from Prince Charles), Angelina Jolie (that dress which made a sticking out leg pose an internet sensation) and Demi Moore (worth a million dollars in ‘Indecent Proposal’.
The little black dress comes in all shapes and sizes, from a simple shift shape to a flattering maxi dress. It can be long sleeved or strapless, a flirty mini worn by a teen, or a sleek evening dress worn by a celeb. It is still the colour of choice for funerals, but is more often than not to be the choice for evening wear, since it is the epitome of sophistication and effortless chic. It can be minimal and classic, or adorned by a statement necklace for the ultimate in glamour.
With Christmas season upon us, it is fitting that Little black dresses are having a style moment – not that they ever went away of course. So this post is dedicated to a feast of little black dresses which have one subtle difference. None of the styles chosen cost more than £30. Effortless style on a shoestring – what’s not to love?

The little black dress is one of my favourites – great during day, at office/formal and going on a night out! Lovely choices too 🙂 fab post x
The first thing I thought when reading this was Black is the new Black this year. I have had a very colourful wardrobe over the last few years vowing never to wear black again but as I sit here, writing this comment I look over to the clothes I bought with me for being away with work, ALL BLACK DRESSES! Obviously not for the party season but still – it’s definitely something I am enjoying. My favourite is the sequined one from Dotty P’s! So beautiful! Hooray for the LBD! 🙂 x
I like Nicole and Drew’s style, it’s always very bohemian. As I love to wear black, when it comes to dresses, I prefer slip dresses – midi length mostly x
