Miss Selfridge S/S 2011 – The theme tune to your season.
The Spring/Summer collection from Miss Selfridge has to be one of the loveliest on the High Street. It has something for every taste, an amazing range of dresses of all shapes, lengths and colours, wide leg 1970s style trousers, beading, denim, and a smattering of jumpsuits. I love the whole collection, with favourite tunes popping into my head as I mentally put outfits together. Here are my key picks, with the songs that inspired them.
Look 1 – Pretty in Pink.
Remember Blake Lively wearing those fantastic, pink wide leg trousers in the last series of Gossip Girl? Well, if like me you thought she looked absolutely amazing, this is the look for you. Taking its cues from 1930s wide leg trousers that were the sleeker, floatier form of the garments, this pleated flares are just lovely. Team with a beaded camisole, embellished clutch bag and corsage sandals for a seriously glamorous Gossip Girl/Sex in the City look.
Look 2 – Young Hearts Run Free
The 1970s, particularly the Studio 54 era, are big news this season. Jumpsuits were an integral part of 1970s styling, ranging from aviator style worn by the likes of Kelly Marie, to spandex efforts, and the infamous white suit worn by Elvis in Hawaii. Todays jumpsuits take their lead from the beautiful prints of designers such as Bill Gibb and Ossie Clark. Wear with a stacked show, and a drawstring bag, that could either be worn cross body, or danced around, for the optimum effect.
Look 3 – Nights in white satin.
Nude shades are still huge, and this season they look young and fresh. Inspired by Emma Watson’s clean lines at the Elle Style awards, this draped jersey dress is just perfect. However, nudes always need to be lighted slightly – we are not all made of porcelain, so add a tan clutch and a sexy pair of leopard print platform shoes for the perfect party look.
Look 4 – Red Blooded women
Red is one of my favourite colours, and is one of the key shades this season. This silk dress has a boho/Spanish vibe to it, and I love the longer length. Pair with nude Ostrich heels for leg lengthening effect and this is a dress that could take you anywhere.
Denim is a staple of any wardrobe, and this year there is a slight country feel to them. When I saw this shirt and desert boots I thought this would be a perfect look for Florence Welch, with a slightly quirky feel. Think Honky Tonk women, cowboy hats and Gram Parsons, and get set for the perfect festival outfit.
