Next Key trends – it’s all about Gatsby

When Next announced a special network challenge in order to find a guest blogger for their ‘Style Secrets’ blog, I was immediately interested. I love to blog about the sort of clothes that I personally love to wear, especially those from one of my most visited High Street stores. I decided to take up the challenge to show Fashion-Mommy readers what I would choose as the five key pieces for A/W 2012 from the current Next collection. My picks were influenced by the most eagerly awaited film of the season – the Carey Mulligan/Leonardo Di Caprio vehicle ‘The Great Gatsby’.

The latest Great Gatsby movie is released on Boxing day and promises to be as big an event for fashion as it will for film. The original F Scott Fitzgerald novel was written in 1925, at the height of the roaring 20s, and this most fashionable of era’s will be the setting the party trends for the upcoming festive season. The images of Carey Mulligan in beautiful feathers and beading, drop waisted dresses in lace and shimmering fabrics, and darker black and gold art deco trends will dominate our festive season wardrobes, and Next is right at the forefront of this most glamorous of looks.

How to get the look with Next

This beautiful dress takes one of the key shades of the 1920s – nude, and adds another key trend for A/W 12, brocade, as an embroidered detail. The drop waist is pure Jazz Age, but the look is updated by the dippy hemline.

The Floral embellished cami is exquisite, and has all the hallmarks of the Gatsby era. It features a palette of nude and black that makes this art deco in style, and it also has 1920s style floral motifs in the beading. It looks totally amazing with black wide leg trousers, but you could wear this with jeans and heels for a Friday night look too.

Another 1920s style that has been given a 1960s shot of fun is the embellished shift dress in white and gold. With a pattern that resembles art deco fans, there is a definite 20s flapper feel to this, but the shorter hemline means that this is looking to the decade known as the ‘swinging sixties’ too!

The gorgeous laser cut butterflies on this pretty vest are very reminiscent of the fluttery detail on Carey Mulligan’s mauve dress in the released stills from the Great Gatsby. This is a great way to get some of that vintage style into your day wardrobe, this is so pretty it will look great dressed down with skinny jeans or cigarette pants.

My final choice of key picks for the Gatsby season is this beautiful, gold embellished, pearl wrap. Next have realised that the most beautiful of gowns should not be ruined by dark and heavy outdoor coats and so have provided this gorgeous cover-up to take you from the taxi to the club. But it seems such a shame to restrict something so gorgeous to just evening wear, so wear it scarf style to jazz up plain winter coats, adding glamour to even the darkest of days. You know Daisy Buchanan would approve!
