Oscars 2013 – My top 10 Dresses – fashionmommy's Blog

So it’s all over, the 2013 Oscars was one of the most anticipated ceremonies in recent years, with some real vintage films and performances to savour. In terms of the dresses, I don’t personally think it was a vintage year, most stars looked great, but safe in their choices, and there were so many strapless dresses that I was overjoyed when the long-sleeved vision of Jennifer Hudson walked onto the red carpet. But there were still some beautiful looks to enjoy, and so I have chosen my favourite 10, that I will announce, X Factor style, in no particular order.

Naomi Watts in Armani Prive

Naomi Watts looked sublime in a silver/gunmetal sequined gown from Armani Prive. The daring cut out detailing on the shoulder fitted perfect, and this gown, which on the wrong person could’ve looked a bit showgirl, just looked ultra glamorous on the beautiful Naomi.

Amy Adams in Oscar De La Renta

Remember that scene in Sex in the City – An American Girl in Paris, when Petrovsky comes back from the gallery late, and finds a sleeping Carrie in the folds of the most exquisite grey ballgown? Well, that is what Amy Adams reminded me of in her fairytale Oscar De La Renta dress. In fact, I remarked to über blogger The Very Simon G that this was the sort of dress that SJP herself would’ve worn to the Oscars herself, and he agreed. The perfect Oscar dress.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

I must admit to having a huge style crush on Kerry Washington, and she didn’t disappoint in Miu Miu. This splash of coral and the floral bodice stood out in the sea of nude dresses, and I loved the slightly 1960s feel of this dress. It was very Jackie Kennedy style, sort of like those dresses she wore when she visited Paris in those early days of Camelot.

Jennifer Hudson in Roberto Cavalli

Jennifer Hudson bucked every trend on the night in this royal blue dress from Cavalli. Her long-sleeved, heavier long was fabulous, it fitted like a glove and glistened with silver on the red carpet. One of the best on the night, and definitely one of Jennifer’s best ever.

Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott

Another hit from Nicole. This beautiful dress from L’Wren Scott had an art deco feel, with the shimmering black and gold swirled design. But it oozed sensuousness on the red carpet from a curvier Nicole. Hair was slightly scruffy, but you couldn’t argue with that dress.

Sandra Bullock in Elie Saab

The ever elegant Sandra Bullock went for a red carpet specialist in Elie Saab and was destined never to fail. She looked immaculate in a vintage style lace and bead evening gown that wouldn’t look out-of-place in ‘Dancing on the Edge’. The bag was all wrong, but the dress was so right.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture

Jennifer Lawrence looked like the winner she proved to be in this white princess gown from Dior Couture. Yes the dress was slightly bridal in style, but her elegant hair and make-up, and youthful addition of the knotted necklace tied down her back just added something that screamed ‘movie star’.

Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive

I’ve hummed and arghed about including this dress, even though I love it. The beading detail is exquisite, almost cobwebbed and the copper colour is beautiful. Jessica’s hair and make up just said Rita Hayworth reincarnated, so why was I stumbling? I guess the dress colour, though beautiful, is just so near to Jessica’s skintone, and I really wanted her to wear colour. But this is still a beautiful, old Hollywood goddess look, so a place on the list is only right.

Adele in Jenny Packham

Adele went back to black in beaded Jenny Packham and looked amazing. The dress was glamorous and exquisite in the bead detailing and was such a great success after the horror of the Grammys bedspread. Her 1960s beehive styled hair and perfect make-up made her number one in the beauty stakes too.

Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille Couture

And finally to perhaps the most fashion-forward gown of the night. From the ruffled hemline to the belted waistband, and those stunning floral applique details around the bodice, this was a real showstopping gown from Zoe Saldana. She carried this off as well as a catwalk model and was a vision amongst a sea of mediocrity.
