Peaky Blinders Series 6 – Is Gina Grey The Breakout Star?
Last night saw one of the most eagerly awaited television events of the year, as the opening episode of the 6th, and final series of the iconic Peaky Blinders was aired. It was an emotional affair, as the programme said goodbye to the wonderful Aunt Poll, aka actress Helen McCrory who tragically died of cancer last year. The new series is set four years after that event, with Tommy in America to broker a drugs deal, Arthur lost in a haze of alcohol, and Polly’s son Michael vowing revenge on the person he feels is responsible for his Mother’s death, his uncle Tommy. And, In the midst of all this, there is a new and slinky queen with the hardboiled accent of the traditional gangster’s moll, ready to step into the limelight, seeming to hate Tommy Shelby, and yet with an undeniable sexual tension between them. I am talking about Gina Grey, the wife of Michael, played by the brilliant, enigmatic Anya Taylor Joy.
I’m already a huge fan of Anya Taylor Joy’s work. I loved her as Emma in 2020 Jane Austen big screen adaptation, and adored her in the Netflix smash hit ‘The Queen’s Gambit’. She has the air of an old Hollywood film star, is a total wow on the red carpet, and has a mysterious, elegant style that works well in a wide range of roles. As Gina Grey you are reminded of the femme fatales of the 30’s and 40’s, the young Barbara Stanwyck, 30’s era Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, the sort of tough women who were often described as ‘broads’. Gina is glamorous, seems to be the power behind her husband Michael, and has her powerful uncle’s ear. She is no pushover and nobodies fool, and Tommy may have met his match in this blonde.
Gina Grey’s styling is impeccable. In this series she is blonder, more platinum blonde that the light brunette she was in series 5. Her dresses are slinky and beaded, and she tends to wear hats a lot, jaunty berets, pillbox styles with veils that showcase her wonderful eyes, totally in keeping with the early 1930’s, depression era look, oh so stylish and glamorous, with an art deco feel.
Gina Grey is going to play a big part in the action in this final series of Peaky Blinders, and I for one am going to enjoy watching her style evolution.

She’s a fine actress. ‘Queen’s Gambit’ was brilliant. But she didn’t quite fit ‘Peaky Blinders’, imo. But I think it was mostly her rather static character. So she’s the connected American vampy woman who hates the Peaky Blinders and is something of a tramp. Blah. Also, she’s too damn skinny on the series. She looks much better with another 10-12 lbs. on her. Those curves we’ve seen in some other roles are all but nonexistent in the show.
