Princess Beatrice has the last laugh over THAT hat!

It was the hat that launched a thousand quips! Designed by Phillip Treacy, we asked –  did it look like a toilet seat, a telletubby, a crab or all manner of other things. It was the hat which had its own  Facebook page, with thousands of followers, and was much discussed on television, in magazines and on Twitter. I  even had my own radio discussion about the hat on my local station Radio WM, chatting to Joanne Malin about the strange design.

But tonight, Princess Beatrice is the person laughing longest and loudest. Rather than ignoring the ridicule, or sulking in a corner, the Princess decided to turn the hat debacle into something totally positive. She decided to put the hat up for auction on Ebay, with the proceeds going to two of her chosen charities, UNICEF and Children in Crisis. And tonight, the hat has been sold to the highest bidder, selling for a staggering £81,100.01! Not bad for something christened Princess Beatrice’s ridiculous hat!

I think this is a triumph for Beatrice. She has shown her sense of humour, and a savvy sense of public relations by selling the hat.  She has said,” I’ve  been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities. I hope the winner of the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have”. The comment shows her warmth and sense of fun, and this auction will win her plenty of  new admirers. I was particularly impressed that she made a link to the Facebook page, and featured some of the hilarious images on the  auction site.

The Princess set up her own ‘Little Bee Initiative’ in order to auction the hat. Duncan Bannatyne was said to have bid £50,000, but at present the successful bidder for the hat is unknown.  The lucky person will receive an iconic piece of British Royalty memorabilia, and help two vital charities. For that, all involved should be applauded, but non more so than the highly Practical Princess, who turned a fashion faux pas into a total personal triumph.
