Stylish Television : High Seas
The phenomenon that is Netflix has introduced us to all kinds of new series, including programmes not originally made in English. As someone who is a huge fan of Scandi dramas, the idea of subtitles is never off putting, but the Spanish made Netflix series High Seas has instead been dubbed (pretty well it has to be said.). High Seas is a frothy, glamorous murder mystery all set aboard a wonderful looking 1930’s cruise ship, and taking place in the late 1940’s, just after World War 2. It concerns murder, mystery, a lost microfilm, Nazi treasure, and lots of romance. It is beautifully shot, has a truly glamorous cast, and is strangely addictive. It has three series, I’ve just finished the first, and am truly hooked. It is the ultimate in escapism.
The heroines of the piece are sisters Eva and Carolina Villanueva. They are boarding the ocean liner Bárbara de Braganza, which is on route to Brazil, with Caroline engaged to the owner of the ship Fernando. They smuggle a woman called Luisa on board when she asks for their help, saying she is fleeing for her life. But when it appears that Luisa has been murdered and thrown into the sea, the sisters realise that they are tied up in something more dangerous than just a runaway woman, and that it may involve their own father (now deceased) and uncle.
The sisters, as played by Ivana Baquero and Alejandra Onieva are both stunning. Alejandra, as Carolina, is a real 40’s heroine, with the look of Veronica Lake crossed with Kim Basinger in LA Confidential. Her wedding dress in particular is an absolutely stunning piece of design. But it is Baquero who is the real feisty heroine, and should absolutely be your trouser inspiration for Autumn 2021, her use of silk blouses and wide leg trousers is just so chic and utterly elegant.
High Seas is just the sort of frothy escapism that is perfect for Summer viewing if the football is not your thing. There are three series to catch up with, and it is a feast for the eyes and offers so much stylish inspiration for those looking for a wardrobe overhaul.

I don’t know to be honest, but there are currently lots of wide leg trousers at places like M&S and Next.
