Summer Security For Your Home

Summer security is a bit of a minefield, we are all so hot with the current heatwave that it is very easy to leave windows open both day and night, an open invitation to a burglar. But there are still ways you can protect your home and give yourself some sort of piece of mind. DPP Solicitors have been putting together some hints and tips for home security and in this post I am adding a few ideas that I use in my own home.

Watch those Windows

For many of us, our windows are currently always open, but it is important that you close them, particular those on a lower level, when you go out, and when you go to bed. Some windows can be vented, but you need to check how easy it is to open a window from a vented position – if you can open it then so can a burglar.

Make sure you check that windows are closed if you have blinds – these are great for keeping your rooms cool, but they can also lead you to forget your windows are open.

Cameras

Doorbell style security cameras offered by the likes of Ring are a brilliant way to keep an eye on your property even when you are away from it. You can see who is at your front door without actually having to answer it, and the response system can give the impression that you are in your house, even if you are out and about.

Neighbourhood Watch

Once the butt of lots of jokes about nosy neighbours, neighbourhood watch is a great way to ensure that your home is looked after, even if you work long hours that mean you are not at home during the day.

Modern neighbourhood watch groups use modern technology like WhatsApp in order to communicate any strange or unusual goings on and can really make a difference if your home is empty for long periods of time.

Holiday Safety

If you are going on holiday, it is a good idea to get a friend or member of your family to check your property, put out your bins etc, to give the impression that someone is home.

Letters piling up on the mat are a sure sign that you are away, so give a trusted friend your spare key and let them give the impression that the house is occupied.

Sharing is caring!
