The Return of the Bumbag

There are some fashion trends that shine brightly for a while and then disappear forever. Other trends are more mercurial, they disappear, only to reappear, loved once again by a new generation too young to remember them the first time around. One such fashion trend that fits this bill is the once much maligned bumbag, which has popped up again on the Skatehut site in a range of cool designs.

The bumbag was a late 1980s phenomenon, often teamed with a shellsuit and trainers. It was a look that, for a while, was everywhere. But it fell out of favour very quickly, linked to badly dressed tourists who wore them with sandals and sock, or market traders who wore them for a practical, but certainly not fashionable, reason. The bumbag disappeared, seemingly never to return.

But fashion is a strange animal, and the most unlikely of items can make a comeback. Celebrities seemed to rediscover the bumbag, and set out to make it a highly coveted fashion item all over again. Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, Suki Waterhouse and Kylie Jenner showed that the bumbag (or fanny pack as the Americans call it) could be both practical and stylish. Kylie and Suki showed that it was the perfect way to hold your belongings at festivals, wearing their designs to Coachella. SJP, who had worn them as the ultimate style icon Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, now showed that a bumbag could be worn on the red carpet when she teamed a stylish black leather design with an evening dress. Jared Leto, no slouch in the style department, also used a bumbag and totally rocked the look. These new bumbags couldn’t be further away from the idea of Mr Motivator.

And it is not just at the festivals or on the red carpet that bumbags have reappeared. They have also returned to the catwalk with embellished ones at Ashish. Celine may have called their version a beltbag, but it most definitely has a bumbag vibe, whilst the Rebecca Minkoff version was neat and quilted, with more than a nod to Chanel.

So why has this most unlikely item made a comeback? The truth is we now, more than ever, like to keep our important possessions safe – our money, our keys, our phones, our credit cards, and a bumbag is the right size to keep all those things in whilst also keeping them close. It leaves the hands free too, so it can be very practical at festivals, whilst riding a bike or a skateboard or scooter, when we dance the night away, or try to push a pushchair or pram. It is a safe and secure place to keep our belongings, and can be worn above, or below our coats, or just over a t-shirt, making it perfect for all seasons.

In addition, with sportswear and sports luxe trends so popular, bumbags actually look a good fit style wise, but the black leather version show that they can also work in a stylish, more grown up way too.

Festival fashion with a difference from Coachella

Coachella is that festival that will all wish we could go to. Taking place every year, it is the festival that the celebrity fashionista’s love, the one with the glorious weather, the one with no mud, the one where you can actually wear white. It combines sunshine, music, great clothes, pool parties, celebrity launches and lots of glamour. Yes, it is the one festival you can enjoy even if you hate tents!

I have been looking at all the outfits from this year’s festival and have chosen my favourite looks. Admittedly, some of these looks were seen at the events that surround Coachella – I doubt very much that Dita’s Art Deco inspired look even had a sniff of a band, and there are no Kendall Jenner looks either. The person who, for me, dominates the best dressed parade from Coachella this year has to be Alexa Chung, who shows that this year’s 70s trend translates so well into stylish and unique festival wear, and is about more than suede skirts and fringes.

Celebrity get the look with Jessica Alba, Daisy Lowe and Jourdan Dunn

The start of a new month, and a gloriously sunny day, no wonder this edition of celebrity get the look has so many items that are just screaming out my favourite word “Summer”. There are footwear looks from Ugg Australia that were all seen at the recent Coachella festival, including Jourdan Dunn showing how boots can still be made springlike if you teamed them with pretty shorts (her complete outfit is from Topshop if that also takes your fancy). Model Chloe Nygard takes those hen night glitter faves and makes them festival friendly – possible due to the teaming with multi-coloured hair and very quirky shorts. And Coachella DJ Daisy Lowe wears my personal faves, the ultra wedge Lucy sandals.

Taylor Swift spotted in Liberty

Taylor got this gorgeous Liberty print tote on a trip to London – she hasn’t been spotted out and about with it  yet, but I’m sure this is just a matter of time…

In other Liberty news, the fabulous Vera Farmiga was spotted wearing a shirt made from Liberty fabric in the recent series of Pyscho. Vera plays Norma Bates in the series and has been winning series acting plaudits for her role. I love this particular print and thinks she looks particularly lovely in this look. In other episodes she has also sported Liberty print lookalikes from J Crew.

Louise Thompson in Honor Gold

A celebrity post can’t pass by without an appearance from at least one of the Made in Chelsea ladies. This time it is the lovely Louise, still one of my fave Chelsea girls. She appeared in the ball segment of the last episode in a stunning black backless dress from Honor Gold. The black is still available, but I totally love the vibrant colour of the new coral version. There is also a short version if you prefer a more flirty look.

Billie Piper wears Birkenstocks

I asked on Twitter last week if Birkenstocks were having a moment…and this is the image that prompted the question. I actually love everything that Billie is wearing in this picture – although I have to admit that sandals and a winter style coat are not necessarily the most obvious fashion bedfellows. But Birkenstocks have long been something that I think are a summer essential, and white is just the freshest option. Perfect for summer in the city, and sitting around the swimming pool.

Jessica Alba at the MTV Awards – Get the look

Jessica Alba is a total style crush, one who never seems to get it wrong. She looked so amazing at the MTV awards, in what might be the most gorgeous summer outfit option – crop top, and Grace Kelly style full skirt.

Amy Childs for Dorothy Perkins

Ex-TOWIE star Amy Childs has just launched her first collection for Dorothy Perkins, and it is full of lovely dresses and jumpsuits that are just lovely for special occasions. As you would expect, there is a lot of lace and figure hugging designs, but the dresses are also surprisingly demure, and very pretty.
