An evening talking hair with Nicky Clarke

A few weeks ago, before all the excitement and the frenetic madness that was Style Birmingham Live, I attended another event that could only be classed as amazing. Hair maestro and all-round legend Nicky Clarke hosted an evening to celebrate the opening of his new salon in Birmingham’s Mailbox, and I was very lucky to receive an invite to the event.

The new salon is a classy, glamorous affair, with lots of space to ensure you avoid the sometimes cramped, claustrophobic confines that can be a problem in small, hot salons. I particularly loved the wall which is filled with glossy magazine covers that Nicky styled the hair for, a testament to his longevity and importance in the world of styling.

The highlight of the evening was a chance to ask questions about hair, and to listen to advice. Nicky talked of the importance of washing your hair properly, and I truly believe that everyone in that room will never, ever wash their hair in the bath again! There were tips on maintaining colour, getting the right cut, and also on how to style hair into an updo that is easy to do, and looks great.

DSCN4356Nicky clearly loves the hands-on approach when it comes to hair, and as the floor asked questions, Nicky couldn’t resist a practical approach with his answers. TV presenter and weather girl Lucy Kite was just one of the willing models who had her hair semi- styled by the man himself. I must admit to being a bit of a coward in this department, my own hair had been cut the night before and I didn’t want to face that age-old question ‘who cut this?’

I had the most amazing night, and Nicky is truly inspirational, passionate about his work and just so warm and charming,

Many thanks to Rewired PR for the invitation.

Style Birmingham Live – A huge Success

Last weekend saw what was, quite possibly, the greatest Style Birmingham Live ever. This really was an event that had it all. The weekend started with a bang with a champagne reception and hair treats from the Francesco Group. This was followed by an amazing spectacle of fashion from the cream of Birmingham retailers, from House of Fraser and the Bullring, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, with good old M&S thrown in for good measure. The show was presented by Emma Willis and Rylan Clark, which was a totally genius pairing, they bantered so well and made the show warm and funny as well as a visual treat. With the added attraction of Brix Smith Start giving the benefit of her fashion knowledge, and Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model winner Lauren Lambert strutting her beautiful stuff down the catwalk, this was an unmissable show with a spectacular wintry finale.

There were other attractions all over the city. The Mailbox was transformed into Hollywood with the famous sign, a red carpet and a star search. Lady Penelope’s Fab 1 pink car was outside the town hall, along with the yellow Selfridges van which is swiftly becoming a familiar sight around the city. And there were savings galore to be had in the city’s many shopping destinations.

Birmingham’s favourite presenter Lucy Kite was filming all the key events of the day for Shopping in Birmingham, and Fashion-Mommy managed to make it in front of the camera too, although I think the promise of a role in Corrie is a little bit ambitious…

Reviewed Scarlett & Jo Green Crochet Collar Shift Dress

I am a huge fan of Scarlett & Jo. Since the brand launched in Evans stores I think they have produced a consistently gorgeous range of dresses and tunics that offer glamour and elegance. Some of the dresses in the collection have been slightly overlooked in light of the amazing Powerfit dresses (you can view the whole Powerfit range here), but Scarlett &Jo is about so much more than the Powerfit frock.

The green crochet collar shift dress is a case in point. A stunning, dark green, 1960s style dress, with loose silhouette and a cute crochet Peter Pan style collar, this dress is simply gorgeous. Coming in green, red, blue and purple colourways, I was sent the green version as a special blog birthday present and fell in love with it immediately – the colour is just so pretty.

This is a dress of small details that make it perfect. The sleeves are gorgeous, in sheer chiffon, with slight elasticated to give them this seasons volume. The dress is a simple shift shape, but does have a tie belt around the back to create shape. The crochet collar is eye catching and very pretty and means you really don’t need to be wearing a necklace with this.  I accessorised my look with black heels and a bag, but would love to see this teamed with red too. (thinking perfect for Christmas maybe?) This is the perfect evening dress to take you from Summer nights to Autumn, just add tights to move the look to cooler nights.

I gave this dress a test drive in the best way possible, I wore this dress to attend Selfridges 10th Birthday party in Birmingham. This dress past with flying colours. It received lots of compliments, particularly for the colour. It was comfortable to wear, to move in and to dance in, and it still looked good by the end of the evening.

I love this dress so much, I’m thinking of getting it in the red colourway too.
