Next – Customise your denim

The word ‘customise’ fills me with dread,

I’m not that handy with a needle and thread…..

I love fashion, every single element of it, but my own skills with a needle and thread are amateur, scrap that, infantile to say the least.  So when Next approached me to see if I would like to take part in a special customisation challenge I was both excited and terrified, especially as the competition was being judged by someone who really does have a talent for customising and personalising clothing, Kirsty from Fashion For Lunch.  But a challenge is a challenge, so I decided to have a go…be kind to me.

The challenge was just customise a rather gorgeous denim shirt from the current collection.

The shirt is lovely, with sleeves that can be rolled up or down, a blue/black denim finish, and a soft denim feel. I decided that I would customise the shirt influenced by my ultimate style icon – Carrie Bradshaw, and this means oversized corsages, pearls and a bit of vintage bling. I also found an incredible 1940s image of Hedi Lamarr that also served as inspiration.

The inspiration

I figured that I could pick up corsages from my own collection and charity shops, and that pearls and antique brooches would also be easy to find. The customisation itself should be easy as the items could be pinned or tacked on. I basically hoped it could be charming even thought it would be amateurish.

I had a lot of fun with this project, but not enough to go running out to buy a sewing machine.  What I love is that because I just tacked the things on, I can remove them easily to go back to that rather cool Next shirt…

*With thanks to Next for sending the shirt, and telling me I was one of their Top 10 Engaged Bloggers – WOW!

Today’s first post is inspired by the picture above that Asda George posted to it’s Twitter feed yesterday. I absolutely fell in love with these Court shoes, the Ice Cream sorbet colours and classic style had my longing for Spring and the chance to ditch the tights and grab a bit of pretty again. In adddition, the £12 price tag is one that is hard to beat – at that price you could treat yourself to both colours and not feel that guilty.

So this post is dedicated to even more shoe porn. These are the shoes that I am currently lusting after, incorparating both flat styles and sky scraper heels, designer looks from Pierre Balmain, vintage inspiration from Tamaris at Zalando and one of my local heroes, Agnes and Norman. There is also a mention for the Boden shoe of the season, the Alice, which is so stunning I virtually weep every time I think about them, and then check my already empty bank account (oh to be a poor blogger!). But prices on this post start from just £12, something even my bank manager couldn’t moan too loudly at.

Do you have a favourite style from the ones featured today? Or is there another pair that have caught your eye on the High Street, or in a designer range? Would love to know your thoughts.

Embracing Faux Fur at Next this season

At the risk of repeating myself for the umpteenth time, I have to say I am not a fan of Winter. It is too cold, too dark and too miserable for me, I love light nights, warm days and sunshine. But one thing I do like about Winter is the way it is suddenly acceptable to add really fun, faux fur pieces into the wardrobe, with the mantra seeming to be ‘the brighter, the better.’

I took a little Christmas shopping trip with my mom and sister on Sunday, and mom treated me to a fabulous soft grey fun fur gilet from Next that I have had my eyes on for some time. I tried it on over my dress and loved the boho look, but I know that this is a piece that can work equally as well with jeans or skinny cords on the school run. I have to say that I was seriously impressed with the Next collection of furry pieces – they ranged in colour and style, from accessories to full length coats, and were really affordable too.

After trawling through the Next website, I have to say it is definitely the place to go for faux fur – the site is just full of gorgeous pieces, including a Downton Abbey style eyelash cape, and a fur patch scarf that I have my eye on (I tried it on in store and it was just the softest, loveliest piece – I need it in my life! – husband hint in case he’s reading!).

Here are some of the faux fur pieces from Next that are well worth a look, starting with clothing.
