The Evolution Of Bingo

The game of Bingo has a rich history, dating as far back as the 1530s. The origin can be traced back to Italy, coming from a lottery game called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia” which was played religiously every Saturday. From there, the game was later introduced to the people of France in the late 1770s, now dubbed “Le Lotto”, mainly played by wealthy Frenchmen. The 1800s saw Germans playing out their own version of the game, however it was used more for educational purposes than anything else. At this point, no one would have ever imagined that the game would take off so massively, and end up dominating every casino website on the internet!

By 1929, the game had reached North America and was affectionately referred to as “Beano”. At this point, it was a country fair game, first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia, where a dealer would select numbered discs from a little cigar box with the players marking off the numbers on their cards with beans. They would then shout out “Beano” if they won a line or full house.

From here, the game caught the attention of New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe, who eventually coined the name “Bingo” after hearing someone mispronounce the former name. Lowe went on to hire a Columbia University math professor, Carl Leffler, to help him develop an increase in the number of combinations within the Bingo cards.

By 1930, Leffler had created up to 6,000 different Bingo card combinations, ensuring that there would be fewer non-repeating number groups and conflicts when more than one person ended up achieving full house. This task eventually proved to be too much for Leffler, as he soon drove himself insane, becoming entirely fixated on the numbers and their combinations.

A Catholic priest from Pennsylvania approached Edwin S. Lowe and asked if his Bingo game could be used as a way to raise funds for the church. Lowe agreed and the game was a hit, becoming even more popular now church goers had got a taste for Bingo. In fact, by 1934 roughly 10,000 Bingo games were being played per week.

When the games were hosted by churches and non-profit groups to raise money, they were mostly allowed to go ahead during a time where the United States had temporarily banned all gambling.

As the casino business began to rise in America, Bingo could also be found in most locations. Lowe actually built his very own casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, called the Tallyho Inn, which gained a decent amount of popularity amongst gambling fanatics. It’s been reported that today, more than 90 million dollars are splashed out on Bingo games each week, in North America alone!

In 1996, the first online Bingo site was launched, called Bingo Zone. Available in America, the site started out as extremely basic in its style, but it went on to pave the way for the future online Bingo world to grow and flourish into the massive community and range that we know and love today. Players would now need to sign up for access to these online games, with the first ever format being a 90-ball game, ready to be played all throughout the day. Although it was a simple game, the fact that people could now access their favourite Bingo games from the comfort of their own homes completely revolutionised the way we play the game. Thanks to
