The Fashion Moments of 2010 pt 1

2010 has been a memorable year on the fashion front.  There have been numerous trends, from Cheryl Cole style bondage tights to maxi dresses emerging as a fashion staple regardless of the season. 1950’s and 1960’s style was a big story, with curvy models appearing on the catwalk for Louis Vuitton and Prada, as well as for Mark Fast and Giles Deacon. We have seen the emergence of Christina Hendricks, Carey Mulligan and Diana Vickers as new style icons, and have said goodbye to Alexander McQueen, Catherine Walker and Corrine Day. The year has ended with the surprising news that the iconic Carine Roitfeld is to step down as the editor Vogue Paris, with the race now on to replace her. With so much happening, it is hard to choose the fashion moments of 2010…but here are some of the things I really loved in 2010.

Sex in the city 2 fashion-fest.

Although opinions over the actual film were somewhat divided, (I personally loved it..but many didn’t),the fashion parade from Sarah Jessica Parker and the girls at the endless stream of film premieres was a joy to behold. From SJP’s tribute to Alexander McQueen, to Kristen Davies’s vintage obsession, the girls provided the style story of the summer.

Lady Gaga at the Grammy Awards

Lady Gaga has had many interesting looks this year, not wearing what looked like a piece of steak at the VMA’S! But she did look truly beautiful at the Grammy Awards, when she wore an ethereal looking custom-made dress by Armani Prive. Amongst the safe stylish dresses, and usual trashy looks (I mean you Ke$sha!), Gaga looked over worldly, and the look frankly left me, well…gaga!

Curves on the Catwalk

This was the year when Christina Hendricks exploded onto the scene, being named the sexiest woman alive, and gracing the front cover of Grazia magazine. Crystal Renn walked the catwalk for Chanel and Zac Posen, whilst Beth Ditto was the star turn for Gaultier. A pregnant Abby Clancy and Kelly Brook walked for Giles, whilst Ruth Jones, Holly Willoughby and Toccara Jones flew the flag for curves on the small screen. It was not all plain sailing however, Crystal Renn was noticeably slimmer on the catwalk, and it was her face, rather than her figure that featured in Chanel campaigns. However, Look magazine at the close of the year reported that M&S had sold 33,000 of ‘ its ‘s ‘2 sizes bigger’ bra in the run up to Christmas, proving that women are definitely going for the more busty look this season.

Grace Kelly at the V&A

The Grace Kelly exhibition at the V&A was a feast for those who love the allure of ladylike glamour. Featuring a range of her Hollywood costumes from films such as High Society, as well as clothes from her personal Princess wardrobe of Chanel, Yves St Laurent and Marc Bohun for Dior, along with original Hermes Kelly bags, the exhibits were stunning in every way. I feel really lucky to have been able to view items that belonged to such a style icon.

Michelle Obama wears vintage.

It was enough to send the American fashion press into spasms. Michelle Obama, champion of new designers like Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo, was pictured over the Christmas period wearing a beautiful black vintage evening gown from Norman Norell, with whispers that many more vintage pieces have been sourced for her for 2011. I think she looked absolutely amazing in the gown, with its echoes of past presidents (after all, Norman Norell was a great favourite of Marilyn Monroe, who was linked romantically to a certain US President…)

Kate the last for Topshop

The first of November marked the launch of the final Kate Moss Topshop collection. Kate appeared for her usual few minutes at the launch party held as party of Fashion’s night in, looking ageless in a sequined catsuit. The collection itself had a vintage 1930’s glamorous feel, with glittery  beaded evening dresses, feathered capes, vintage prints and fur tippets. Some past lines were relaunched as part of the Kate Iconic range, whilst original prints of Kate from previous ad campaigns were on display in the  Oxford Circus store.

A stunning Kirsten

This is my favourite magazine cover of the year. At a glance, it could be a vintage movie magazine from the 1950’s featuring Grace Kelly. Look closely, and it is possibly more modern, showcasing the glacial beauty if Diane Kruger. In fact, it is neither. This stunning image by Mario Testino is of the beautiful Kirsten Dunst, a million miles away from the grungy teenager of Crazy/Beautiful, which I watched for the first time this year and really enjoyed.

The shoe Galleries at Selfridges

Possibly the most exciting piece of rel estate in London today, the shoe galleries are a must visit part of the Selfridges store on Oxford Street. Featuring everything from high street names (River Island, Kurt Geiger) to designer lust haves (Jimmy Choo, Nicholas Kirkwood), the store is separated into apartments that echo the designer of the shoes they are home to. A shoe lovers paradise, the shoe galleries are home to 5,500 pairs of shoes! Whats not to love?

Kate Middleton fever

Ever since the royal engagement was announced, the whole of the fashion world has been plunged into Kate Middleton fever. We are yet to find out who will win the coveted job as wedding dress designer, but already Kate is proving that her patronage is highly lucrative. Issa has become a household name based on the stylish blue dress that Kate wore to announce the engagement, whilst the white Reiss dress worn in the official engagement snaps by Mario Testino is set to be relaunched in January. Kate has won the approval of Karl Lagerfeld for her simple, but effortless style, and is set to be the biggest fashion story of 2011.

Emma Watson – style icon

This was a big year style wise for Emma Watson. Her Mia Farrow crop and choice of amazing looks for the Harry Potter premieres throughout November, along with the coveted December Vogue cover saw Emma leave the ranks of pretty girl to become a real style icon for 2010. Intelligent, interesting  and beautiful. Emma is an inspiration, 21st century style.
