‘Wednesday’ And The Best Of The Little Black Dress

It is the programme of the moment, and its star, Jenna Ortega, is the undoubted breakout star of 2022. I am talking about the wonderful Addams Family spin off Wednesday, which is currently breaking all records on Netflix with its brand of out there humour, mystery and just a little bit of horror. It is a fabulous, eight episode treat, and with promises of another series, looks to be here to stay.

As already mentioned, the stunning Jenna Ortega is a teenage Wednesday, with a neat line in black dresses although she professes to have no love of fashion. But methinks she doth protest too much, particularly after the scene at the Rave n Dance ball from the ‘Woe what a night’ episode. The stunning look is vintage Alaia, but there are already a whole host of lookalikes available online, including the gorgeous dress below from Shein.

Of course, Wednesday isn’t the only Addams capable of rocking a little black dress. Mother Morticia, here played by the ultra glamorous Catherine Zeta Jones, is the epitome of gothic beauty, following on from a long line that started with Carolyn Jones in the 1960’s.

The chic elegance of classic black only accessorised by yet more black got me thinking about some of my own favourite celebrity little black dress looks. Going right back to Coco Chanel, black has always been the elegant, refined, glamorous look of choice for red carpet looks and beyond.

Here are some of my own personal favourites.

1920’s Coco Chanel and Louise Brooks

Rita Hayworth as Gilda and Ava Gardner as Kitty in The Killers

Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Kate Moss

Diana, Princess of Wales in the ‘revenge’ dress

Sex and the City – The Original Series

Julia Roberts in Vintage Valentino at The Oscars

Angelina Jolie in the Versace Dress that spawned it’s own Twitter account
