Bedding Essentials For A Blissful Night’s Sleep

Are you lying awake staring at the ceiling at night? Maybe you’re struggling to actually get to sleep? We all know the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, but achieving it is often easier said than done.

Many factors come into play: our mood, our health, how busy we are, when we go to bed, and most importantly, the bed itself. A mattress with a stray spring, or a lumpy pillow can all contribute to a bad night’s sleep. Here are our picks of essentials to provide you with a blissful night’s sleep.

Start from the bottom with a supportive base or bed frame

Before we get into sheets and quilts, it’s important to start with the bed. A without a supportive base or solid bed frame is essential for a blissful night’s sleep. Your choice between a bed base or a bed frame comes down to the space in your bedroom, your budget, and style preferences.

Bed bases can provide you with a sturdier foundation, take up less space, are easier to transport, and are more budget-friendly, however they are less stylish, and can be bulky and heavy.

Bed frames, on the other hand, provide you with more style options to work with, including a bedhead and storage, like under-bed drawers or built-in shelving. However, assembly is required, weight isn’t distributed as well compared to a bed base, and it can be difficult to move around.

Add to the base or bed frame with a good quality mattress

Once you’ve chosen a bed base or bed frame, it’s time to invest in a quality mattress. Once again, the type of mattress you choose depends on personal preference.

If you’re a back or stomach sleeper who’s on a budget and needs a firm mattress, innerspring might be right for you. For side sleepers, go for a memory foam that will shape around your body. These two options are just the start! It’s important to do your research to find the right fit for your needs.

A good quality mattress should not only make you feel comfortable, it should support your body weight and last for at least seven years, no matter what build or material you go with.

Rest with a supportive pillow

Once you’ve chosen a good quality mattress to support your body, it’s time to pick a pillow that will support your head and neck.

As well as your mattress, you also need to take your sleeping position into account when choosing the right pillow. If you’re a back sleeper, a medium-to-firm pillow that supports your head and neck is ideal. If you’re a side sleeper, you’re going to want a firm-to-extra-firm pillow that relieves pressure in your shoulders, and props up your head so it’s aligned with your spine.

While sleeping on your stomach is generally not recommended, if you do then you’re going to want a soft pillow with low loft to prevent any strain on your neck. How long your pillow lasts depends on what material you go with, however it’s generally recommended that you replace your pillow at least every year or two.

Start dressing up your bed with a sheet set

Once you’ve got the foundations sorted, it’s time to start thinking about the accessories. Sheets and bedding sets don’t just add to the aesthetics in the room,  a quality sheet set can help with temperature regulation throughout the night for the perfect slumber.

A sheet set is a budget-friendly way to add bedding, which will prolong the life of your mattress and pillow by adding a layer between them and your body (and its oils).

When choosing a sheet set there are still a few practical things to consider, such as thread count (strands of fabric per square inch), weaves (two threads interlaced to form the fabric), and staple (length of fibres in a weave). Basically, the higher the thread count, the better the quality, however a sheet set with a thread count as low as 200 will still be soft (as well as affordable).

Cotton is the most common bed sheet material. Egyptian cotton is the highest quality cotton, and because of this it can be pricey, however they are soft and durable. Bamboo cotton sheets are ideal for the summer months due to their breathability, whereas flannel sheets are better for winter as they retain warmth.

When it comes to picking the colour of your sheet set, as your bedroom is meant to be a calming and relaxing place to sleep, colours that evoke this vibe would be ideal. Lighter shades of blue and green as well as neutral colours are known for their calming effects.

Add a finishing touch with a quilt/duvet/comforter

There’s no better feeling than crawling into a soft, fluffy bed at the end of a long day. A quilt/duvet/comforter is the perfect finishing touch and your final bedding essential. A quilt is a great way to add your personal taste to your bedroom. However, it also plays an important role in keeping you warm as you sleep, especially during the cooler months.

For the winter months, a quilt/duvet/comforter made of wool is the way to go, and for the summer months, a lightweight and breathable bamboo is ideal. However, make sure you pick a quilt based on how you like to sleep. Some people prefer to be warm and cosy, while others prefer to have a little bit of breathing room!

With these bedding essentials and the benefits they’ll provide your health, you’ll definitely get the blissful night’s sleep that you need and deserve. Once you’ve picked the right essentials for your bed, you’ll be able to live your best life, even on your busiest and most hectic days. On those days, getting into bed with the right essentials will be that much more enticing.
