Starter For Ten Is Just Superb

In my late teens I had an interview, along with some school friends to appear on the quiz Blockbusters. It was a disaster and, needless to say I never got the chance to ask ‘can I have a p please Bob?’ The memory though, has never left. New musical  Starter For Ten had its press night at The Rep, Birmingham last night and tells the story of Brian, and his quest to appear on the legendary quiz University Challenge, whilst simultaneously winning the girl of his dreams. It is a warm and witty tribute to that most difficult, and beloved of quizzes, and this failed quiz contestant absolutely loved it!

What’s it all about?

Brian has loved University Challenge since his childhood when he used to watch with his dad. His dream was that one day, he would appear on the show. Flash forward Ten years and Brian, who lost his dad when he was eight, is on his way to Bristol University to study English Literature. He quickly forms a friendship with the strident, sassy Rebecca, and sets out to secure his place on the University Challenge team. But all his plans are thrown into jeopardy when he meets the beautiful Alice who also wants a place, more in pursuit of fame than any love of quizzing. What happens next is sometimes hilarious, sometimes excruciating, but always very, very entertaining, particularly when legendary quiz master Bamber Gascoigne makes his frequent appearances.

The Cast

If there is such a thing as a perfect cast, then this is it. Adam Bregman is great as Brian, often awkward and prone to saying the wrong thing. (The cap scene is just hilarious). Asha Parker-Wallace is wonderful as passionate Rebecca, with  incredible vocals that really impress.

Stephen Ashfield is a joy as the all singing, all dancing Bamber Gascoigne, stealing many scenes, whilst Mel Giedroyc plays dual roles as mom Irene, and Julia Bland. Mel is just brilliant, the scene with Julia speed quizzing the Bristol team in particular is the work of comic genius. Christian Maynard is also good as best friend Spencer, his easy going charm great foil for the more awkward Brian. Imogen Craig makes an impressive debut as the glamorous, manipulative Alice.

It is Will Jennings though, as team captain Patrick (or is that Watrick) who steals the show. He gives an unforgettable comic performance that is just sublime.

Production

This is such a flawless production. The musical numbers work so well, from Alice’s Madonna inspired ‘For the Story’, to the full company performing the super catchy ‘Whiplash’. I love the staging, particularly during ‘The Christmas Special’ where the two different family gatherings are organised like teams on University Challenge. This feels like something fresh and new, such a change from the never ending jukebox musicals that dominate musical theatre as of late.

Starter For Ten is destined to become a new favourite musical. It is funny, warm and full of heart. Plus, it has an all singing, all dancing Bamber Gascoigne. What’s not to love?
