Creating A Serene Bedroom Sanctuary

Your bedroom should be a peaceful retreat, a place where you can unwind and recharge. When clutter is allowed to build up, it completely ruins the tranquillity making it harder to relax and get a good night’s sleep.

There are a few different, but effective, strategies that could help with decluttering this most personal of rooms. Hopefully one or two will help you deal with whatever it is that’s getting between you and a serene bedroom.

Start with a Clean Slate

If you’re not careful, the bedroom can quickly become a sort of dumping ground for items that have no other home. Before you can really think about properly decluttering, start by removing everything from the room that really doesn’t belong there.

  • Go through your bedroom and remove any items that don’t belong, such as laundry, kids’ toys, or paperwork. Everyone’s different in how they organise things, so you decide what belongs in your bedroom and what doesn’t. There are no right or wrong decisions.
  • Once you’ve cleared out the items that don’t belong, dust the surfaces and vacuum or sweep the floor.

Assess Your Belongings

Divide your belongings into categories, such as clothing, accessories, books, and decor. A mental division or picture is enough – you don’t have to physically get everything out into piles of stuff unless you want to.

For instance, maybe you have a bookcase of favourite bedtime reading. Start there. Weed out ones you won’t read again, ones you didn’t like, or the ones that don’t belong there. If you don’t have a bookcase, maybe your collection of accessories or cosmetics could do with a cull? You choose which small category needs attention, and deal with that first. Try not to get distracted. Stick with your one chosen category until it’s done so you don’t get overwhelmed.

 Organise Your Wardrobe

When it comes to the wardrobe, some say that if you haven’t used or worn an item in the past year, you should consider letting it go. A better alternative could be taking a seasonal view of your clothes, and instead of throwing things out to make room, put seasonal items into self storage instead. Swap things in and out of storage as the seasons change, and you’ll find items get a new lease of life when you haven’t seen them for a few months.

For the things that are left, invest in good storage solutions such as bins, baskets and hangers to maximise closet space. You could add shelves or hooks for accessories, or even an extra rail.

If you want to go a step further you could organise clothing by category, such as keeping work clothes together, casual items together, space for skirts, shirts and blouses, dresses or trousers. Another way is to organise by colour, or you could try activity-based organisation.

Keep the Bedside Table Tidy

Bedside tables often become a bit of a catch-all for various items, leading to clutter and making it hard to dust.

  • Keep only essential items on your table, such as a lamp, clock, and maybe your book.
  • Organise smaller items, like glasses or chargers, in a decorative tray or basket. This keeps everything contained and easy to access but it also makes cleaning easier. It’s quicker to pick up one basket of items than it is to pick up the individual items.

Create a Relaxing Atmosphere

Once you’ve decluttered and organised your bedroom, it’s time to focus on creating a relaxing atmosphere:

  • Choose Calming Colours: Choose soft, neutral colours for your walls and bedding. Colours like light blue, soft grey, or muted pastels can create a calming effect.
  • Incorporate Soft Textures: Use soft bedding, plush pillows, and cosy throws to create a comfortable and inviting space. Layering textures can add a feeling of warmth and depth to your bedroom.
  • Add Personal Touches: Incorporate personal items that bring you joy, such as photos or artwork. However, be mindful not to overcrowd your space with too many decorations.

Establish a Cleaning Routine

Once you’ve done the work to make your room how you’d want it, the next (and potentially hardest) step is keeping it that way. It takes a bit of ongoing effort.

Spend a few minutes each day putting things back in their designated spots so mess doesn’t build up over time. A simple tip that works all over the house is to “never go empty-handed”. Whenever you’re leaving a room take something with you that doesn’t belong and put it where it does belong. It takes next to no time, and it’s a habit that really helps you stay on top of clutter.

When it’s time to dust or vacuum, the job is easier because you can get right on with it.

However you tackle the challenge, and whatever solutions you use, from renting a self storage unit for the overflow or simply investing in better home storage, a warm, comfortable and welcoming bedroom is an oasis of calm at the end of a busy day.
