How Do TV Beds Work? Everything You Need To Know

Watching your favourite TV shows and films in bed is one of life’s little pleasures, and it’s even better with a TV bed.

TV beds provide the ultimate vantage point, putting your TV only around 6 feet away from you. The beauty is your TV is completely hidden when not in use, rising from the footboard on your command for a perfect viewing experience.

But how do TV beds work? This article discusses everything you to know about them. Read on to find out if a TV bed is right for you.

What is a TV bed?

A TV bed is a bed frame with a TV mount built into the footboard. The TV mount is motorised, letting you retract your TV and pop it up on-demand, which is perfect for freeing up wall/desk space and decluttering your bedroom.

You can also get TV beds with built-in speakers – a regular socket powers these, and most connect to your TV via Bluetooth.

How does a TV bed work?

After inserting your television into the TV mount, just run the power cable to the socket/power outlet you want (you might need to use an extension cable). You can also run the aerial cable to the TV similarly.

The bed frame will hide the power and aerial cables, and the motorised mount will have enough clearance so that the cables don’t get snagged.

TV beds do not have their own power source unless they have speakers, in which case, you need to plug them into a 3-pin outlet.

Some TV beds, like the Star TV Ardor, have a slot in the side for a Sky TV box (or any other similar device). If you have a games console, you must ensure the slot/storage is wide and long enough to house it (some modern consoles are enormous!).

If your TV bed has built-in speakers, your TV will connect to the speakers wirelessly via Bluetooth (make sure your TV has Bluetooth before buying!) or aux-in. If via cable, it will have a port built into the frame, letting you easily connect your TV with the bed.

How big is a TV bed?

TV beds are available in single, double, king and super king sizes. Still, it’s important to note that this only denotes the compatible mattress size – the actual size of the bed frame differs depending on the product.

Keep in mind that TV beds are longer than the average bed frame because of the extra space in the footboard. For example, the length of the Star TV Val in double size is 2,190 mm (86.22”).

What are the benefits of a TV bed?

  • The best home viewing experience – get the ultimate vantage point for all your favourite content.
  • Hidden TV and media – when not in use, a TV bed looks like any other bed, helping preserve your bedroom’s simplicity.
  • Free up a wall/desk space – make space on the wall for art and shelves and free up desk space for make-up and other stuff.
  • Protect your TV – it is impossible to smash a TV mounted in a TV bed frame because it is suspended within the footboard.
  • Impress visitors and guests – the wow factor of a TV bed never goes away. One look is all it takes to make people envious.

Are there any downsides to TV beds?

  • Cost – TV beds start from around £800, and it’s easy to go over £1,500. You pay more for models with built-in speakers like the 4.1 surround sound system in the Star TV Parfame.
  • Bulkiness – although TV beds free up space on walls and desks, they are longer than the average bed to accommodate the thickness of the TV.
