On Tuesdays We Love Mean Girls
Mean Girls, the iconic film that made a star of Lindsey Lohan, is now a fun and frothy musical that is absolutely ‘fetch’. It has arrived in Wolverhampton for a run at the Grand this week, and it truly is the ultimate Summer musical with great songs, cool bitchy performances and a killer of a storyline thst has a lot to say about friendships and the cult of High School cliques.
Cady Herron comes to a high school in America fresh from living and home schooling in Kenya. She is adopted by Janis and Damian, who promise to help her find her tribe, but to the surprise of everyone she is taken up by Regina King, the Queen Bee of the Plastics, and the meanest girl at the school. Cady is tasked with infiltrating the Plastics and finding their secrets, but somewhere along the line Cady herself becomes ultra popular and shows herself to be capable of becoming just as mean and plastic as Regina herself. And then the school bus arrives…
Mean Girls is the ultimate in sarcastic froth, and is very funny throughout. Emily Lane is perfect as Cady, wide eyed and awkward at the start, turning into a fully fledged Queen Bee as the show progresses. Vivian Panka is a stunning Regina, slinky and glamorous and as cold as ice. I love that her songs have a feel of James Bond theme tunes, perfectly in tune with her slinky style. Georgie Buckland and Max Gill steal so many scenes as Janis and Damian, the true heart of the show and the most likeable characters who are totally true to themselves throughout.
I love Faye Tozer from Steps, but her roles do feel little more than cameos, the best being as Mrs King, wearing more pink than anyone one the stage and nursing a drink problem. Another recognisable face is CBBC’s Karim Zeroual, an energetic, likeable presence on stage, showing off the dancing skills honed on BBC’s Strictly.
The other plastics, Gretchen and Karen, are an absolute hoot. As played by Kiara Dario and Sophie Pourret they are just brilliant, far more rounded characters than in the film.
Mean Girls is a real joy. The perfect, feelgood Summer musical with a great score and a classy cast. I loved it.
