Oscars 2019 – Looks And Trends
Last night was the Oscars, always the glitziest night on the movie calendar, but it has to be said that when it comes to fashion, the 2019 ceremony was a little lacking in the real superstar power. There was no Angelina, no Jennifer Aniston, no Cate Blanchett or Kate Winslet, no Gwyneth, no Renee Zellweger, in short, very few actress arrivals to really get excited about. So thank goodness for Lady Gaga, a slinky and stunning Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren.
This was the red carpet where it seemed that all the staid and seriousness of the ‘me too’ carpets had no given way. There was more pink, tulle and frills than I ever remember seeing, really girly girl confections that were more Malibu Barbie moments that Royal Shakespeare company. The emphasis seemed to be on fun, even if, like Linda Cardinelli’s up/down confection, it sometimes gave the impression of 1970s frilly nightie’s previously worn by Olive from ‘On the buses’/
But there were also some standout moments, Brie Larson actually made me think she was Margot Robbie with her silver sheath dress and beachy blonde hair. Lucy Boynton continued a stellar award season in a Quality Street purple dress that struck a dramatic note in the sea of pink and fussy, whilst Charlize Theron in Dior was, quite simply, perfection, in a dress that gave me the chills of Hilary Swank winning in a backless gown all those years ago (for Million Dollar Baby fact fans.)
Overall, it was a night of popular winners (Regina King, Olivia Coleman and Rami Malek) but not necessarily a vintage night all round.
