Exposure Press Day with Dr Martens, John Smedley and Barbour

Exposure held their press event a few weeks ago in Central London, and I popped along to check out all the collections that will be hitting stores later this year. I love many of the brands that Exposure represents – they are the epitome of great British craft and design, and are a veritable who’s who of British fashion.

I’m talking brands like Dr Martens, who just seem to go from strength to strength (I’m guessing as long as there are students, there will be Doc Martens!). There latest collaboration is with another icon of British culture – the Beano, and these are sure to be popular since they are just so much fun, even if you are not a Dennis the Menace or Beryl the Peril. Pretty floral designs add a feminine touch to another new collection – I would’ve so loved them when I was 18.

John Smedley is another brand that screams ‘Rule Britannia’ with every collection. The Mod influenced knitwear is particularly strong next season, I love the use of stripes, and pattern within the jumpers and cardigans. The traditional knitted polo tops are both modern and retro – and seem so perfect for the year Britpop celebrates 20 years. I look at these tops and immediately think of Damon Albarn.

There were lots of other great pieces on display. Supermarket chic was represented by Tu – surely the most classic of the fast fashion collections carried by the supermarket giants. I loved the mustard wool coat, and the cream and lace blouse will also be hitting my shopping trolley come Autumn. Other lust after items included floral wellies from another classic British name, Barbour. And I really feel no well dressed traveller should take a plane without investing in some of the gorgeous blue luggage from Globe Trotter.

With all this, plus Cutler and Gross, Christopher Raeburn, Nike and Levi’s – this really was an eclectic and stylish press event.

Barbour create perfect Winter Staples

It is December, and that means we are well and truly entering Winter. Snow may not be here yet, but the mornings are cold and frosty, nights see the temperature dropping drastically and there have already been a few days when the mercury has hardly risen above that zero. This is the perfect time to take a look at your Winter wardrobe to make sure you have the key pieces that will help you survive the Winter freeze. A good coat, lots of chunky knits, shoes or boots with a sensible grip and a cute and warm hat are all vital pieces when the temperatures plummet. And the same rules apply to the man in your life and his wardrobe.

Repertoire Fashion is a great website where you can find a host of your favourite brands for both yourself and your other half. Armani jeans, Ted Baker, Diesel and Sonia Rykiel are just some of the brands you will find, and the site also has a very large collection from Barbour.

Barbour is the legendary English Heritage brand that is world famous for the padded Barbour Jackets that are beloved of everyone from celebrities to the Royal Family. But Barbour is about so much more than just jackets beloved of the ‘hunting and shooting set.’ This season they have some fabulous and stylish jumpers that would make a great luxury Christmas present for even the most difficult to please male, cosy trapper style hats that are great for those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, and boots that are sensible and still look great. There are also some really cool t-shirts, including one with an image of the King of Cool, Steve McQueen, wearing a Barbour jacket in 1964.

Shoes – These are a few of my favourite brands

When it comes to choosing my favourite shoes, I must admit that I admire a great many brands. Certain companies seem to excel in producing a certain sort of shoe, and so when you are choosing new shoes, it pays to go to an expert. For classic Mary Jane styles, I always look to Hush Puppies, who take the sensible heel and strap and then add colour and a retro-inspired elegance to them. When looking for a flat shoe that offers comfort with chic ballerina styling I look to French Sole, beloved by Kate Middleton, and certainly more reasonably priced than Pretty Ballerina’s (which I also love incidentally, but my bank balance isn’t quite so keen).
